Winnipeg Jets vs Montréal Canadiens prediction and picks

Result: Winnipeg Jets 5-4 Montréal Canadiens (OT)

Montréal led 4-0 with less than three minutes to play and lost. Owen Beck, Josh Anderson and two Cole Caufield power-play goals built the lead. Then Tyrel Bauer and Morgan Barron scored 42 seconds apart, and Kyle Connor added two more in the last minute, the second on a power play. Dylan Samberg won it 3:30 into overtime. Stuart Skinner made 18 saves for Winnipeg’s first win since 13 October. Jacob Fowler faced 47 shots and stopped 42.

Wrong on the side and the puck line. We had Montréal -1.5 and a 4-1 win, and for 57 minutes that looked comfortable. The shot count says it never was. Winnipeg outshot the Canadiens 47-22, and a 4-0 score had flattered Montréal badly. We’d written that the Jets barely score; they hadn’t been short of attempts. We passed on the total, so there’s no bet to grade there. Montréal is 9-3-3.

The preview as published before the game follows.

Montréal has won five in a row. Winnipeg hasn’t won since 13 October. The Jets were beaten 7-0 in Raleigh on Sunday and arrive at the Centre Bell on the last night of a four-game trip. The Canadiens won the Heritage Classic 2-1 nine days ago. Here’s how we see the rematch.

Jets vs Canadiens odds

Only TonyBet had posted a Canadian price when this page was built: Montréal −189, Winnipeg +147. One price is a thin read on a game. The fuller board will be on our NHL odds page once the other books open it.

Winnipeg is 0-7-2 in nine and 0-5 since the Hellebuyck trade

The Jets are 4-8-3, 28th, and on a five-game losing run. Since they sent Connor Hellebuyck to New Jersey on 23 October they’ve lost all five, conceding 25 goals.

Thirty-four goals in fifteen games is third-fewest in the league. Kyle Connor has eleven of them, close to a third of the club’s total. Mark Scheifele has two goals and ten assists.

The crease is unsettled. Stuart Skinner is 3-4-3 at .887 and was pulled on Sunday after five goals on seventeen shots. Clay Stevenson finished that game, and Nico Daws started on Friday in Florida, stopping 33 of 37.

Josh Morrissey is out with a wrist injury and listed week to week. Dawson Mercer, one of the players who came back in the Hellebuyck deal, is day to day.

Montréal finished 24 points clear of Winnipeg last season, with the better power play and two-thirds of a goal a game more in attack. The kills were within a point of each other.

Montréal is fifth, and Fowler has done most of it

The Canadiens are 9-3-2 on twenty points. Four of the five straight wins came on the road, and on Saturday they beat Pittsburgh 5-4 at home, with Josh Anderson scoring twice.

Jacob Fowler is 7-1-0 with a .932 and two shutouts. One of them was a 46-save night in St Louis a week ago. Jakub Dobes, at .853, started the 5-2 win in Dallas.

The power play is the oddity. It converts 9.5 per cent of its chances, last in the league. Nick Suzuki and Mike Matheson are out, Ivan Demidov has been ruled out for two to four weeks, and Kirby Dach missed Monday’s skate with an illness.

The last five meetings averaged five goals

Montréal leads the regular-season series 27 wins to 18 across 45 meetings, and has won the last three.

Those five produced 3, 6, 5, 5 and 6 goals. Three of them stayed under 5.5. The Heritage Classic was 2-0 until 15:24 of the third, when Isak Rosen scored Winnipeg’s only goal.

Who starts in goal is an open question. Winnipeg has split between Skinner (10 starts, .887) and Daws (1, .892), and Montréal has split between Fowler (8 starts, .932) and Dobes (6, .853). Clubs rarely confirm a goaltender before the morning skate, so these numbers describe the season, not the night.

Injury news for every other club is on the NHL injury report.

Players to watch

Lane Hutson, Montréal. Thirteen points and a plus-eight, and the opening goal at Princess Auto Stadium.

Kyle Connor, Winnipeg. Eleven goals, five on the power play. Nobody else on the Jets has more than six.

Jacob Fowler, Montréal. He stopped 33 of 34 at the Heritage Classic, the first meeting of the season.

Score prediction

Montréal Canadiens 4-1 Winnipeg Jets. A club on a five-game winning run, at home, against one that has scored eight goals in its last five.

Jets vs Canadiens prediction

Montréal is the side, and it isn’t a close call. Fifth against 28th, Fowler against a club that has used three goaltenders in three games, and a home team rested since Saturday.

The moneyline is short at -189, so the puck line is where the value sits. Winnipeg has lost four of its last five by two goals or more. Our lean: Montréal -1.5 at +130 or better.

We’d leave the total. Montréal’s power play is last in the league and Winnipeg barely scores, but the Jets have also conceded five or more in four of their last five.

Every club is ranked weekly in our NHL power rankings, while the NHL schedule lists the rest of Tuesday’s games.
