Charlotte Hornets history
The original Charlotte Hornets joined the NBA in 1988-89, an expansion team in the same season as Miami. They first reached the playoffs in 1993 and beat Boston in the first round. Owner George Shinn moved the club to New Orleans in 2002, where it later became the Pelicans.
Charlotte got a new team for 2004-05, the Bobcats, owned by a group led by Robert L. Johnson. Michael Jordan bought a minority stake in 2006 and took majority control in 2010. The Bobcats reached the playoffs for the first time that spring.
The club became the Hornets again in 2014. It also took over the history and records of the 1988-2002 team, so its record books start in 1988. Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall bought Jordan’s majority stake in 2023. In 2025-26 the Hornets won 44 games, 25 more than the season before.
Most famous player: Kemba Walker
The Bobcats drafted Kemba Walker ninth overall in 2011, and he spent eight seasons in Charlotte. No one in franchise history has scored more points or made more three-pointers.
Two members of the first Hornets team still lead the record book. Muggsy Bogues has the most assists and steals. Dell Curry played the most games, and his No. 30 was retired on 19 March 2026.
