Orlando Magic history
The Magic were one of four expansion teams granted in 1987 and played their first game in November 1989. They went 18-64 that season. The DeVos family bought the club in 1991, and a year later Orlando won the draft lottery and took Shaquille O’Neal first overall.
In 1993 the Magic drafted Chris Webber and traded him to Golden State for Penny Hardaway and three future first-round picks. O’Neal and Hardaway took Orlando to the 1995 Finals, where Houston swept them. O’Neal left for the Lakers in 1996.
Dwight Howard, the first pick in 2004, led the Magic to the 2009 Finals, which they lost 4-1 to the Lakers. The club moved into the Amway Center, now the Kia Center, in 2010. Orlando won the Southeast Division in 2024 and 2025 and lost in the first round both times.
Most famous player: Shaquille O’Neal
Shaquille O’Neal was the first pick in 1992 and Rookie of the Year in his first season. He played four seasons in Orlando and led the Magic to their first Finals in 1995. On 13 February 2024 his No. 32 became the first player number the club retired.
Dwight Howard, the first pick in 2004, holds the Magic records for points, with 11,435, and for rebounds and blocks. He won three Defensive Player of the Year awards in Orlando and led the club to the 2009 Finals.
