NHL power play rankings 2026-27
It is 2 games into the season, so these numbers are noise. A team that scores on its only power play of the night reads as 100%. We publish the table because it is the live one, but nothing in it means anything until clubs clear about 20 games. The 2025-26 table below is the one to use for now.

| 32. Philadelphia Flyers | 15.7% | 37/235 | 11.9% | 9 |
Edmonton Oilers ran the best power play in the league at 30.6%, scoring 68 times on 222 opportunities. Philadelphia Flyers were last at 15.7%. That gap, roughly 15 percentage points, is worth about 34 goals across a full season on an average number of power plays.
Net power play percentage: the number most tables leave out
Standard power play percentage counts the goals you score. It ignores the ones you concede while a man up. Net power play percentage subtracts shorthanded goals against, and on some teams the difference is severe.
| Team | Power play | Net PP | Drop | SH goals conceded |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pittsburgh Penguins | 24.1% | 19.0% | -5.2 | 12 |
| Colorado Avalanche | 17.1% | 12.2% | -4.9 | 13 |
| Washington Capitals | 17.8% | 13.3% | -4.6 | 11 |
| New York Rangers | 24.7% | 20.5% | -4.2 | 9 |
| Boston Bruins | 23.4% | 19.6% | -3.8 | 9 |
| Philadelphia Flyers | 15.7% | 11.9% | -3.8 | 9 |
Pittsburgh Penguins are the clearest case. A 24.1% power play looks like a strength until you count the 12 shorthanded goals they gave up, which drags them to 19.0%. If you are betting a team total or a puck line, that is the number that matters, not the headline one.

Colorado Avalanche killed 84.6% of their penalties, the best in the league. Vancouver Canucks were last at 71.5% and conceded 65 power play goals, which is a large part of why their season went the way it did.
NHL special teams rankings: power play and penalty kill combined

The seven Canadian clubs on special teams
| Club | Power play (rank) | Penalty kill (rank) | Special teams |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edmonton Oilers | 30.6% (1st) | 77.8% (20th) | 108.5 |
| Toronto Maple Leafs | 21.3% (15th) | 81.2% (8th) | 102.5 |
| Montréal Canadiens | 23.1% (10th) | 78.2% (18th) | 101.4 |
| Ottawa Senators | 24.0% (8th) | 75.7% (29th) | 99.7 |
| Calgary Flames | 16.2% (31st) | 80.4% (12th) | 96.6 |
| Winnipeg Jets | 18.5% (24th) | 77.6% (21st) | 96.1 |
| Vancouver Canucks | 21.8% (14th) | 71.5% (32nd) | 93.3 |
Edmonton Oilers had the best power play in the entire league at 30.6%. At the other end, the Canucks killed only 71.5% of their penalties, the worst figure of any club in the NHL.
Five-on-four against five-on-three
Most power plays are five-on-four. The two-man advantage is rare and converts at a much higher rate, so a club with an unusual number of them can look better than its even five-on-four work deserves.
| Team | Overall PP | 5-on-4 | 5-on-3 | 5-on-3 goals/opp |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Edmonton Oilers | 30.6% | 29.6% | 37.5% | 3/8 |
| Dallas Stars | 28.6% | 28.4% | 18.2% | 2/11 |
| Minnesota Wild | 25.2% | 23.0% | 30.8% | 4/13 |
| Carolina Hurricanes | 24.9% | 22.8% | 46.2% | 6/13 |
| New York Rangers | 24.7% | 23.9% | 22.2% | 2/9 |
| Vegas Golden Knights | 24.6% | 24.1% | 20.0% | 1/5 |
| Pittsburgh Penguins | 24.1% | 22.3% | 62.5% | 5/8 |
| Ottawa Senators | 24.0% | 23.6% | 25.0% | 2/8 |
Five-on-three time is where the eye-catching percentages come from, and no club gets much of it. The five-on-four column is the better guide to how a power play actually runs.
How power play percentage is calculated
Power play percentage is power play goals divided by power play opportunities. A club that scores 60 times on 240 chances is at 25%. Penalty kill percentage is the share of times shorthanded that end without conceding, so 80% means one goal against every five penalties.
Two things the basic figures do not capture. A power play that ends because the team scored still counts as one opportunity, no matter how long it lasted. And neither number says anything about how often a club takes or draws penalties, which is where the volume comes from. Our NHL power rankings weigh special teams alongside shot share, goal difference and form.
Odds across the league sit on our NHL odds page, and availability on the NHL injury report, since a power play missing its first unit is not the power play in this table.
Edmonton Oilers had the best power play in 2025-26 at 30.6%, scoring 68 goals on 222 opportunities. The 2026-27 table at the top of this page updates through the season.
League average sits around 20%. Anything above 25% is a genuine strength and only a handful of clubs manage it across a full season. Below 17% is a problem.
Colorado Avalanche led the league in 2025-26 at 84.6%. Vancouver Canucks were last at 71.5%.
It subtracts shorthanded goals conceded from power play goals scored, then divides by opportunities. It is a fairer measure of whether a power play helps a team, because some clubs give up almost as much as they gain while a man up.
Power rankings rank all 32 teams by overall strength. This page ranks them on special teams only, which is a single part of the game. Both are on the site and they answer different questions.
It rebuilds from the NHL’s own stats feed through the season. Early-season percentages swing wildly on small samples, so we flag the table as unreliable until clubs have played around 20 games.
