The award is given to the goalkeeper who has demonstrated exceptional skill and leadership throughout the regular season.

Unlike other competitions, where the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets scoops the award, the MLS hold a vote among media, MLS players and club management to determine the recipient each eason.

The all-time record for the most clean sheets in MLS history is held by Nick Rimando, who amassed over 150 shutouts in his career. The single-season record for MLS clean sheets is 16, set by Tony Meola of the Kansas City Wizards in 2000.

The MLS goalkeeper of the year award has been won a record three times by Andre Blake of the Philadelphia Union, while Dayne St. Clair of Minnesota United FC was names Goalkeeper of the Year for his regular season campaign in 2025.
