Allen hurt his right knee in the first quarter on Wednesday and did not return, and Proctor left in the fourth with an ankle problem. Allen sat out Friday’s 119-95 win over Philadelphia, as did Jaylon Tyson (ankle), while Proctor and Peyton Watson played. Josh Hart missed the win in Chicago with right ankle soreness, so he is on the Knicks’ list too.

League rank out of 30 on this season’s box scores (8 and 9 games). Ratings are points per 100 possessions, estimated from the box score.

Defence and second chances carry the Knicks. They are fifth in defensive rating and third on the offensive glass, but 26th by effective field-goal percentage. Cleveland shoots far better and protects the ball, fifth in turnover rate.

The boards decide it if Allen sits. Cleveland is already 20th in offensive rebounding, and without its starting centre it has less to stop Karl-Anthony Towns, who averages 13.6 rebounds.

Score prediction

Knicks 113-108 Cavaliers. Cleveland is 3-1 at home but lost its only game on the second night of a back-to-back. With Allen in doubt and a short turnaround, we lean to the Knicks by five.

Knicks vs Cavaliers prediction

The Knicks’ defence ranks fifth, and their last two wins came by 13 and 30. Priced at the Canadian books, the Knicks are about a 64 per cent chance.

Cleveland’s offence is eighth and its shooting numbers are better, so a fit Allen and a home crowd that has seen the Cavaliers win three of four at Rocket Arena could be enough to swing a game we expect to be decided by a few possessions.

Our pick: the Knicks to win.

What would change it: if Allen were cleared and Brunson limited, we would switch to Cleveland.

For how both measure up across the league, see the NBA power rankings. You’ll find Saturday’s other NBA games on our NBA games tonight page.
