USA vs Peru: what’s at stake?
There is a Canadian reason to watch this one. The United States open a four-game fall window against Peru, and the last of those four is against Canada at Allianz Field in St. Paul on October 6. What Mauricio Pochettino tries in Orlando is the first evidence of what Canada will be up against.
The Americans come into it off a World Cup that ran hot and then stopped abruptly. They won Group D ahead of Paraguay, Australia and Türkiye, beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the round of 32, and were then taken apart 4-1 by Belgium in the last 16 at Lumen Field. Pochettino has since signed through 2030, so this window is the start of a rebuild rather than a reckoning.
Peru are further back still. They finished ninth in CONMEBOL qualifying on 12 points and spent the summer watching, and the squad that reached Russia in 2018 has largely moved on. This is a long trip for a game that tells them more about their next generation than about their present.
