Thomas Tuchel is the subplot. Switching to a back five with a lead against Argentina invited the pressure that beat England, and he has since conceded his team “got too passive” after scoring while insisting he has no regrets. How he sets up against a better side than Argentina, at home, on Matchday 1, is the most interesting question of the European window.
Spain arrive with the opposite problem: a squad that has won everything available to it and now has to manufacture a reason to keep pushing. They play again in Seville on Tuesday, so rotation is live.
