NHL injury report 2026-27: every team, updated daily

This NHL injury report covers all 32 teams and is rebuilt every morning from the league’s published injury data, so the tables below are the current list of who is out, day-to-day, on injured reserve or otherwise unavailable, with the estimated return where one has been given. Hockey moves on absences more than any other sport Canadians bet on. A starting goalie scratched at the morning skate shifts a moneyline further than a week of form does. The Canadian teams get their own tables, every division follows, and the sections underneath explain which absences actually move a line. 19+ (18+ in AB, MB and QC).

Last updated 23 September 2026, 6:30 AM ET. 63 players listed across 26 teams: 47 out, 10 day-to-day, 4 on injured reserve, 2 suspended. Statuses and estimated return dates come from ESPN’s NHL injury data; where a club’s own announcement differs, the club wins and we note it below.

Injuries that matter for tonight’s games

Opening night is 29 September. Of the players listed this morning, 25 carry an estimated return after opening night, so these are the absences already baked into the early boards.

Canadian teams

The seven Canadian clubs, each with its own table. An empty table is good news. Estimated returns are ESPN’s projections rather than club commitments, and Canadian teams are among the least forthcoming in the league about the nature of an injury.

What matters right now (editor’s note, 22 Sep): Toronto opens the season without Max Domi, who failed his physical after back surgery and is not expected before early November, and William Villeneuve is a knee case into late October. Montréal will be without Kaiden Guhle on defence until roughly late October after minor groin surgery, which thins the left side behind Lane Hutson. Vancouver’s Thatcher Demko is still working back from hip surgery and is not skating with a main group, so the Canucks’ goaltending on opening night at Edmonton is the first real lineup question of the Canadian season. Calgary has Jonathan Huberdeau on IR with a hip problem into early October, Ottawa is managing Artem Zub and Thomas Chabot in camp, Edmonton’s Mattias Janmark is on IR after spring surgery, and Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck is listed as suspended by the club amid a trade standoff rather than injured, which for pricing purposes is the same thing until it is resolved.

How injuries move NHL lines

Not every name on this page matters to a bettor. Goalies matter most. A confirmed backup start against a projected starter is the single largest injury-driven move in hockey pricing, and it usually lands at the morning skate, hours after the overnight moneyline was posted. That gap between the news and the reprice is where injury reports earn their keep. A first-line centre or the power-play quarterback moves a line a little. A fourth-line winger does not move it at all, whatever the headline says.

Totals react differently. Losing a starting goalie tends to lift the over/under more than it shifts the side, and losing a top scorer tends to pull it down. The puck line barely notices either, because it is a fixed 1.5-goal handicap whose price simply follows the moneyline. Player props are the sharp end: most books void a prop if the player does not dress, but the props of the players who step up a line are the ones that get mispriced. Our prop bets guide covers how the books settle them.

Use the report as a filter, not a signal. If a game has a goalie question, wait for the confirmation. If a team has lost a top-pair defenceman for a month, that is already in the price by the second game. The NHL betting hub has the full strategy section, and the Saturday predictions column and power rankings account for the absences listed here each week.

How to read the statuses

Out means the player will not dress for the next game, with no formal roster move. Day-to-day is a short-term issue, usually a game-time decision. IR, injured reserve, requires a minimum of seven days out and frees a roster spot but not cap space. LTIR, long-term injured reserve, requires the player to miss at least ten games and 24 days and is the mechanism that lets a team exceed the cap while he is out, which is why contenders manage it so carefully around the trade deadline.

Upper body and lower body are not diagnoses. NHL clubs are not required to disclose injuries, and most do not once the playoffs are in sight. Undisclosed is the honest version of the same thing. The estimated return date is ESPN’s projection from the club’s guidance and beat reporting, not a promise from the team, and it moves. Suspensions and contract disputes are listed because the player is unavailable, which is all the price cares about.

If a late scratch changes how you see a game, these are the NHL sportsbooks we rate for Canadians, listed by province, with the full comparison on our NHL betting sites page:

Where the data comes from and when it updates

The tables are generated from ESPN’s NHL injury data, which is compiled from club announcements and beat reporting and refreshed through the day. We rebuild this page each morning Eastern time during the season, and the stamp at the top tells you exactly when. Between rebuilds the morning skate can change a goalie’s status, so treat the report as the starting point and the club’s own game-day announcement as the final word. Season-long markets that absences feed into, including the Stanley Cup odds, are covered across the rest of our NHL section.

NHL injury report FAQ

Which NHL players are injured right now?

The tables on this page are the current list, rebuilt each morning from ESPN’s NHL injury data. As of the last update 63 players were listed as out, day-to-day, on injured reserve or otherwise unavailable, with the Canadian teams broken out separately.

What does day-to-day mean in the NHL?

It means a short-term injury with no roster move: the player could return for the next game or miss a handful. In practice it is the status that produces game-time decisions, so confirm at the morning skate before relying on the lineup.

What is the difference between IR and LTIR?

Injured reserve requires a minimum of seven days out and frees a roster spot. Long-term injured reserve requires at least ten games and 24 days out and also provides salary-cap relief, which is why teams use it to fit players under the cap.

Why do NHL teams say upper-body or lower-body injury?

Because they are not required to disclose the injury and prefer not to give opponents a target. Upper body covers anything from the waist up and lower body anything below it. Undisclosed means the club has said even less.

How do injuries affect NHL betting odds?

Goalies move the market most: a confirmed backup start can shift a moneyline further than any skater absence. A top-line forward or power-play defenceman moves it modestly, and depth injuries rarely move it at all. Books usually void a player prop if the player does not dress.

How often is this NHL injury report updated?

Each morning Eastern time during the season, with the exact time shown in the stamp at the top of the page. The source data refreshes through the day, so a status can change between our rebuild and puck drop.
