Four all-Canadian games: every Canadian in NFL Week 7

Canadians in the NFL Week 7, Squawka CA

Four of this week’s games put Canadians on both sides, one more than Week 6, and the best Canadian performance of the weekend came in a game our own desk called against the model. Twenty of the 28 Canadians on NFL rosters play, six are on bye with Buffalo and the Chargers, and two are unavailable.

Theo Benedet started Thursday night in Chicago

Theo Benedet of North Vancouver started on the Chicago offensive line in Thursday’s 30-24 win over New England, and Neville Gallimore of Ottawa played on the defensive front. Chicago gained 405 yards and Caleb Williams finished 22 of 33 for 308 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, though the line gave up three sacks. It was also the first Week 7 result to go against our model, which made New England a 1.6-point pick at 56%.

Chuba Hubbard ran for 120 yards at Philadelphia

Chuba Hubbard of Sherwood Park carried 89 times for 426 yards and four touchdowns through five games after running for 120 and a score in Carolina’s 25-14 win at Philadelphia, which is comfortably the best Canadian season in the league and was comfortably the best Canadian afternoon of the week. It also settled an argument: our Signal model made Philadelphia 69% favourites and our desk took Carolina anyway, which is on the record in last week’s Week 6 predictions. Carolina hosts Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Alex Singleton still leads the league in tackles

Alex Singleton holds the NFL lead in combined tackles on 68, nine clear of Ernest Jones IV of Seattle, having taken Denver through last Thursday’s 17-14 win over the Seahawks. He has still not recorded a sack or an interception, which is the shape of a leading tackle count: it belongs to the linebacker who never leaves the field.

Jevón Holland of Coquitlam shares the NFL lead in interceptions on three, now level with five others after Hezekiah Masses of Las Vegas joined the group. Holland travels to Houston on Sunday, where one of the Texans’ own Canadians is waiting.

Tennessee finally won one

Tennessee beat Indianapolis 26-20 to end an 0-5 start, which matters here because Elic Ayomanor of Medicine Hat is on that roster. He has seven catches for 133 yards and a touchdown from six games, a modest return on 14 targets in an attack that had scored the fewest points in the league going into the weekend. Tennessee hosts Cleveland on Sunday, and our Signal model had the Colts at 81% in the game the Titans went and won, which was the single worst call on our Week 6 board.

The four all-Canadian games

Giants at Texans, Sunday 1:00 pm ET, has three. Holland of Coquitlam and Theo Johnson of Windsor face Jared Wayne of Peterborough.

49ers at Falcons, Sunday 1:00 pm ET, also has three. Kurtis Rourke of Oakville goes to Atlanta, where Matthew Bergeron of Victoriaville and Sydney Brown of London, Ontario are waiting.

Bengals at Ravens, Sunday 1:00 pm ET. Chase Brown of London returns from Cincinnati’s bye on 71 carries for 246 yards, and lines up against Tavius Robinson of Guelph.

Broncos at Cardinals, Sunday 4:05 pm ET. The league’s leading tackler against Isaiah Adams of Ajax on the Arizona offensive line, where Albert Reese of Edmonton has just arrived: Carolina waived him on Tuesday and Arizona claimed him a day later.

Six Canadians are on bye

Buffalo and the Chargers are both idle, which takes six Canadians out of the week at once: Dalton Kincaid, Joshua Palmer and Michael Hoecht in Buffalo, and Akheem Mesidor, Deane Leonard and Logan Taylor in Los Angeles. Alaric Jackson of Windsor is back for the Rams after his two-game suspension, so the only two Canadians unavailable this week are David Onyemata, on injured reserve, and Giovanni Manu, who is not on Detroit’s active roster.
