Mexico legend Guillermo Ochoa is set to start against Czech Republic in what will be part of an emotional farewell for the veteran goalkeeper.
ESPN reports what most of Mexico suspected was coming. “Memo Ochoa and Santi Giménez will start against Czech Republic,” John Sutcliffe revealed, lifting the lid on Javier Aguirre’s plans for the final Group A game of World Cup 2026.
For Mexico, it’s a rotation night. Qualification is already done, top spot is secured, and Aguirre can afford to look at his bench. For Ochoa, it’s the moment four years in the making — and, by his own admission, the last of its kind.
Because after Qatar 2022, another World Cup was never the plan. Even Ochoa wasn’t sure he’d be here.

From "let’s see what happens" to a sixth World Cup
“After the World Cup in Qatar, I thought to myself, ‘Let’s see what happens,'” he said a week before Mexico’s opener. “Then the chance to play in Italy’s Serie A came up and I thought, ‘I’m not that far off anymore; I’m very close to the next World Cup.’ That’s when my mind said, ‘I can make it, I feel good, I’m in good shape, let’s go for it.’ But this is going to be my last one. Now there’s no turning back.”

An appearance against Czech Republic will see Ochoa add a sixth World Cup outing to one of the more unusual goalkeeping careers the tournament has produced — putting him alongside the small handful of players who have ever reached that mark.
What stands out is that Ochoa has never made the chase about himself. Asked what joining that club would mean, he turned the answer outward.
“Being on that exclusive list would of course be fantastic on a personal level, but it would be even nicer and more interesting if people remember in the future that a Mexican shares that list with them. They’re light years ahead of me in terms of what they’ve done in their careers, the goals they’ve scored, the titles they’ve won. I don’t compare myself to them at all. But the best thing would be if, one day, we could see a Mexican on that list.”
A career measured in moments, not numbers
The numbers don’t fully explain his place in Mexican football. The moments do. The performance against Brazil in 2014. The saves that should not have been saves. The trick of looking like a different goalkeeper every four years.
Those nights set a bar he’s still measured against, and he knows it.

“That’s the standard, that’s the bar,” he said. “The intention is to be at that level. If I’m on the field, I have to do it. I have to be ready to perform at that level. And if I’m not called upon to do so, I’ll help and support.”
Not necessity — a thank-you
That last line matters. Mexico don’t actually need him on Tuesday. Raúl Rangel has started both group games. Mexico have won both. This isn’t necessity; it’s a thank-you.
Giménez starting is the other talking point. The Milan striker has been used carefully through the group, and a fresh run-out against Czech Republic gives Aguirre a clean look at his frontline before the knockouts — with Ochoa behind him for the send-off.
“Stepping away from soccer is difficult,” Ochoa said recently. “My name and my image are associated with soccer.”
He’s already said this will be his last World Cup. Before the chapter closes, there’s room for one more entry — one more chance to remind a home crowd why his name became shorthand for Mexico at the World Cup.
Mexico have done the hard work. Czech Republic, still chasing a result, will have everything to play for. When Ochoa walks out, he’ll carry something few players ever get — a World Cup moment that was earned long before kickoff.
