The expected-goals numbers confirm McKennie is a genuine finisher from midfield. His 26 Juventus goals beat an xG of 20.73, an overperformance built on getting into the right areas: he logged 476 touches in the opposition box and played 445 passes into the penalty area. Every one of those 26 goals came from inside the box, and his shooting was clinical for a midfielder at a 39.8% shot-accuracy rate.

As a creator he posted 15.38 expected assists and carved out 29 big chances for teammates, 18 of which were converted. The finishing splits are striking too, with 12 of his goals struck right-footed against just three with his left, plus the 11 headers already noted, the mark of a midfielder who is a threat with every part of his game.

Weston McKennie in the USA’s run to the last 16

McKennie was a constant in midfield through the group stage, creating a team-high three chances in the 2-0 win over Australia and adding three shots against Turkey. He started the Round of 32 against Bosnia and Herzegovina and played 89 minutes as the USA won 2-0, with Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman scoring.
