World Cup 2026 bracket: how the 48-team knockout stage works

The World Cup 2026 bracket looks different from any that came before it. With the tournament expanded to 48 teams across the United States, Canada and Mexico, FIFA has added a brand-new Round of 32, and the path to the July 19 final at MetLife Stadium now runs through five knockout rounds. Here is exactly how the bracket works and when each round is played. For the full tournament, see our World Cup 2026 hub.

How the World Cup 2026 bracket works

The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four, labeled A through L, with each side playing three group games. The top two from every group advance automatically, which accounts for 24 teams. They are joined by the eight best third-placed teams, taking the knockout field to 32. That is why the 2026 edition opens its knockout phase with a Round of 32 rather than the Round of 16 fans are used to, and why the tournament runs to a record 104 matches.

World Cup 2026 knockout rounds and dates

Once the bracket is set, it is straight single-elimination knockout football. The schedule runs as follows.

RoundDatesTeams
Round of 32June 28 – July 332
Round of 16July 4 – July 716
Quarter-finalsJuly 9 – July 118
Semi-finalsJuly 14 – July 154
Third-place play-offJuly 182
FinalJuly 192

From the Round of 32, a team must win five knockout games to lift the trophy, one more than at any previous World Cup.

The World Cup 2026 knockout bracket, from the new Round of 32 to the July 19 final.

The road to the final

The bracket is split into two halves, and the group winners are rewarded with a theoretically kinder route than the runners-up and third-placed qualifiers. Avoiding the heavyweights early is the prize for topping a group, which is why the group stage matters so much in a 48-team format. The two sides that come through their half of the draw meet in the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19. Who do we think gets there? Where could the hosts land?

All three host nations have a knockout place firmly in their sights. The USMNT opened with a 4-1 win over Paraguay and, if they top their group, would earn a friendlier side of the bracket; our USMNT starting 11 guide breaks down how Mauricio Pochettino sets them up. Canada, after a 1-1 opener, are battling to reach the Round of 32, as our Canada lineup guide explains. For the group picture, head to our World Cup 2026 hub.
