Regional listings can differ from the national one, and blackouts apply in parts of Canada. Our how to watch the NHL in Canada page sets out the options.

Senators vs Rangers odds

No Canadian book had this one priced when the page went up. Hockey lines tend to land the night before or on the morning of the game, and the NHL odds page carries them as they arrive.

Ottawa has lost its goaltender for a week and it showed

The Senators are 7-4-0 and tenth, but the goal difference is plus one. That is the record of a club winning tight games rather than good ones. On Thursday the tight game stopped arriving, and it stopped arriving badly: six against at home, against a side that had played the night before.

Linus Ullmark is now on injured reserve until 29 October. He was listed day to day before the San Jose game, did not dress, and Ottawa lost 6-2 at home. Samuel Ersson stopped 22 of 26 before being pulled with four minutes left.

The gap between the two is severe. Ullmark has a .945 across eight starts. Ersson has a .835 across three. That is a hundred and ten points of save percentage between the man Ottawa planned around and the man it has. Thomas Chabot is out until at least 27 October and William Eklund until January.

Ottawa finished twenty-two points clear of New York last season and scored half a goal a game more. The Rangers had the better penalty kill, and that is the one column where this season has gone the same way.

New York has lost Shesterkin for the season and is sixth anyway

The Rangers are 7-4-1 and lost 5-4 in Toronto on Thursday, a game they trailed and chased all night. Before that they beat Anaheim 5-2.

Igor Shesterkin is out for the season with a knee injury and Joonas Korpisalo is on injured reserve until early November. Dylan Garand has taken seven starts and has a .915.

The 7-1 defeat at New Jersey on 15 October is still the outlier. Take it out and New York has conceded two or fewer in six of eleven. Put it back and the goal difference is plus eight. That is about right for sixth.

Ottawa has won three of the last five, one of them 8-4

Ottawa leads the all-time series 67 wins to 63 and has taken three of the last five. Four were played in New York. Ottawa won three of those.

Those five produced 3, 12, 6, 7 and 5 goals, an average of 6.6. The spread is the point: an 8-4 and a 5-0 inside fifteen months.

Who starts in goal is an open question. New York Rangers has split between Garand (7 starts, .915) and Shesterkin (5, .927), and Ottawa Senators has split between Ullmark (8 starts, .945) and Ersson (3, .835). A save percentage is a season aggregate rather than a lineup, so treat either name as a possibility and not a plan.

Our NHL injury report tracks every other club.

Players to watch

Samuel Ersson, Ottawa. A .835 across three starts, and the man in possession for at least another week.

Dylan Garand, New York. Seven starts at a .915 in a job he was third in line for a month ago.

Tim Stutzle, Ottawa. The Senators need the scoring to cover the crease, and he is the one who provides it.

Score prediction

New York Rangers 4-2 Ottawa Senators. Ottawa is without its goaltender for another week and New York has the better netminder available.

Senators vs Rangers prediction

New York is the side we would take. The goaltending gap is the whole argument: Garand at a .915 against Ersson at a .835, with Ullmark unavailable until 29 October.

The case for Ottawa is home ice and a head-to-head it leads. It has also beaten New York three times in the last five. Our lean: New York, and the over if the total sits at 6 or lower. The last five meetings averaged 6.6 goals and Ottawa has conceded seven, six and three in three of its last five.

Our NHL power rankings has all 32 in order, and the rest of Saturday’s games is on the NHL schedule.
