Edmonton has just conceded seven at home and lost its best goaltender

The Oilers are 8-2-1 with a goal difference of plus ten. They won two in a row past sixty minutes, 4-3 over Minnesota and 6-5 over Carolina in a shootout, and then lost 7-2 at home to Toronto on Saturday.

Devon Levi went on injured reserve on Friday and is out until around 9 November. He is 6-1-0, so Edmonton has lost the goaltender who won most of these games. That leaves Tristan Jarry, 2-1-1 with a .861 after giving up five on 30 shots to Toronto, and Matt Tomkins. Frederik Andersen is out until late December.

Eight players are out. Mattias Ekholm is gone until 31 October, Matt Savoie until late November, and Mattias Janmark and Jason Dickinson are both on injured reserve. Connor McDavid leads the NHL in scoring by a clear margin, and Leon Draisaitl scored both goals on Saturday to reach twelve.

Edmonton finished a point ahead of Detroit last season and had a power play eight points better, at 30.6 per cent. Detroit conceded slightly less per game, and that is the shape of this game: one side scores, the other tries to keep it respectable.

Detroit has Gibson back and three overtime defeats

The Red Wings are 4-4-3 and lost 4-1 at Calgary on Saturday. Three of their eleven games have gone past regulation and they have lost all three, which is the difference between twenty-third and a playoff place.

Gibson is off the injury list and played all sixty minutes at Calgary. Daniil Tarasov is the one still listed, day to day with a return date of today. Tarasov has much the better numbers: a .940 across three starts against Gibson’s .867 across eight. Whichever dresses, this is the second crease in the game with a question over it.

Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton are both out until 29 October. Simon Edvinsson remains in a contract dispute. Detroit has been outscored by five across eleven games.

The last five have split three-two to Detroit

13 Feb 2024Edmonton 8-4Detroit

Detroit leads the all-time series 87 wins to 76, but the last five have split three-two in Detroit’s favour and two of them needed extra time.

Those five produced 5, 6, 5, 5 and 12 goals. The average of 6.6 is one game, not a pattern. Take the 8-4 out and no meeting has cleared six since 2024, which is a very different read on a total than the raw average gives you.

Who starts in goal is an open question. Detroit Red Wings has split between Gibson (7 starts, .871) and Tarasov (3, .940), and Edmonton Oilers has split between Levi (7 starts, .887) and Jarry (3, .873). Neither number is a promise about tonight, and the line moves the moment a club confirms its starter.

Players to watch

Connor McDavid, Edmonton. Leading the NHL in scoring by a clear margin and the reason the Oilers are second with this goaltending.

Daniil Tarasov, Detroit. A .940 across three starts, the best number in the game, and carrying a return date of 24 October.

Devon Levi, Edmonton. A 6-1-0 record and a .887. Those two numbers rarely belong to the same goaltender.

Score prediction

Edmonton Oilers 4-3 Detroit Red Wings. Edmonton is fourth in the league and at home, and both creases have a question over them.

Oilers vs Red Wings prediction

Edmonton is the side we would take, with less conviction than on Friday. McDavid is scoring at a rate nobody matches and the Oilers are 8-2-1 at home. Against that, they have just been beaten 7-2 in this building and Levi is on injured reserve.

The case for Detroit is the series and the save percentages. It leads the all-time record and has taken three of the last five, and if Tarasov is fit his .940 is the best number on the page by a wide margin. Our lean: Edmonton, and the over is the stronger half of that. Edmonton has scored four or more in five of its last seven, nine goals went in here on Saturday, and neither of the netminders likely to start is above .870. Edmonton runs from −185 to −222 across the four books above, which is a wide spread on one game.

We rank all 32 each week in the NHL power rankings; the NHL schedule has the rest of Monday’s games.
