Charlotte keeps winning short-handed

The Hornets are 3-2 without Coby White or Kon Knueppel, and they won two of the three games in which Miller passed 30, losing only in Detroit on Wednesday. Naz Reid has been a steady second scorer, and Dennis Schroder had 14 in Detroit. They lost 97-89 there on Wednesday, with 23 turnovers.

They play again on Saturday, so this is the first night of a back-to-back.

Washington’s new stars are settling in

Anthony Davis scored 34 against Milwaukee and 29 in Charlotte, and Trae Young had 25 in Chicago, so the two trade arrivals have carried most of the scoring. AJ Dybantsa, the first pick in June, led them with 19 in Cleveland on Wednesday.

George had eight points and 11 assists in that game. Riley has played off the bench.

Washington’s two wins came against Milwaukee and Chicago, by 12 and four points, and Davis or Young led the scoring in both. The Wizards are 1-1 at home.

Players to watch

Brandon Miller, Charlotte. One hundred and four points in three games, though he needed 26 shots in Detroit.

Kyshawn George, Washington. Eleven assists on Wednesday, playing alongside two former All-Stars.

Score prediction

Hornets 112-108 Wizards. Last season’s ratings would make Charlotte a big favourite. Washington’s roster has changed so much that we discount those numbers heavily.

Hornets vs Wizards prediction

Charlotte has won the last five meetings and has Miller in form. Washington has more talent than last season’s 17 wins suggest, and home court.

Our pick: Charlotte to win, as underdogs or at -2.5 or shorter. We’re not taking a total. Charlotte’s games have finished between 186 and 225, and Washington’s new attack has no history to judge.
