Lionel Messi will not play in the 2026 MLS All-Star Game. Fans voted the Inter Miami captain into the squad, but a mandatory rest period after the World Cup rules him out. MLS has officially excused him and removed him from the roster, with Yannick Bright called up in his place.
The timing was always tight. Messi played all 120 minutes of the World Cup final on July 19, a 1-0 extra-time loss to Spain at MetLife Stadium. Ten days later, MLS wanted its biggest names in Charlotte — too soon for a 39-year-old coming off an eight-game tournament.
Why Messi is missing the MLS All-Star Game
The short answer is player welfare, and regulation backs it up. FIFA and player representatives agreed new rules in 2025 giving players at least 21 days of rest once a season or major tournament ends. Messi’s window opened on July 20 and can run through August 10. He produced eight goals and four assists across eight games at the World Cup, dragging Argentina to the final a month after turning 39. He is not the only Inter Miami absentee either: Rodrigo De Paul is taking the same mandated rest.
Will Messi face a suspension for missing the game?
Almost certainly not, and the contrast with last year is the interesting part. In 2025, Messi and Jordi Alba skipped the All-Star Game in Austin without league approval and were ruled out of Inter Miami’s next match as a result. This time the circumstances are different: the absence falls under the mandatory post-tournament rest framework, and MLS confirmed on July 25 that Messi and De Paul would be excused. There is no sanction.
When will Messi return for Inter Miami?
Inter Miami have not set a return date. Messi is sitting out their late-July games, and if he takes the maximum rest available he could miss as many as five matches, pushing his return to around August 10. The playoffs, not late July, will define Inter Miami’s season.
The 2026 MLS All-Star Game without Messi
The game goes ahead in Charlotte on July 29 with Son Heung-min and Thomas Müller headlining, three Vancouver Whitecaps involved, and the MLS All-Stars leading the series 3-1 over Liga MX.
