San Jose keeps beating Toronto and nobody can explain why
The last two were 4-1 in San Jose in April and 3-2 in overtime at Scotiabank Arena in December. Before that came two shootout wins in March 2025, 3-2 in Toronto and 6-5 in San Jose.
The Sharks don’t look like a team that should be doing this. They’re 4-3-0 with 19 goals for and 25 against, and all four of their wins have been one-goal games: 4-3 in overtime against Florida, 5-4 in overtime against Los Angeles, 3-2 in overtime in St. Louis and 3-2 in a shootout in Nashville on Thursday.
Yaroslav Askarov has started five and is 2-3-0 at .848, while Alex Nedeljkovic has won both of his starts at .933 and 1.90. Form says Nedeljkovic. San Jose plays in Detroit on Saturday, so this is its second game in three nights.
How they compare
| 2025-26 | San Jose Sharks | Toronto Maple Leafs |
|---|---|---|
| Record | 39-35-8 | 32-36-14 |
| Points | 86 | 78 |
| Goals for per game | 3.04 | 3.07 |
| Goals against per game | 3.54 | 3.60 |
| Power play | 21.2% | 21.3% |
| Penalty kill | 76.4% | 81.2% |
The Sharks finished eight points ahead of the Leafs last season. Both gave up more than three and a half goals a game, Toronto 3.60 of them, and Toronto’s penalty kill was five points better.
Toronto has eight names on its injury list and a goaltender at .896
The Leafs sit at 3-3-2 and have scored exactly as many as they’ve allowed, 28. After the 5-4 overtime loss to Buffalo on 15 October, it hosts the Islanders on Saturday, two days before this game. The Leafs have allowed five goals in each of their last two.
Sergei Bobrovsky, signed in July, is 1-2-2 at .896 and 3.34 in five starts, and Anthony Stolarz has the other three at .875. Elvis Merzlikins is out long term with a shoulder injury.
John Tavares has been day to day since a collision with a Sabre on 15 October. With Chris Tanev, Dakota Joshua, Max Domi, Miles Wood and three others out, Toronto has eight names on its injury list before Saturday’s game.
Four in a row to San Jose, three of them past regulation
| Date | Result | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Apr 2026 | San Jose 4-1 | San Jose |
| 11 Dec 2025 | San Jose 3-2 (OT) | Toronto |
| 27 Mar 2025 | San Jose 6-5 (SO) | San Jose |
| 3 Mar 2025 | San Jose 3-2 (SO) | Toronto |
Three of the four were one-goal games, two settled in a shootout and one in overtime, so the margins have been thin.
All-time, San Jose leads 36 wins to 35. Toronto’s last win was a 7-1 rout at home in January 2024, three days after a 4-1 win in San Jose.
Team news
| Club | Player | Status |

| Toronto | Chris Tanev | Out, upper body. Likely to need more than the minimum spell on injured reserve |

Toronto’s list is longer and hits regulars: Tanev, Domi and possibly Tavares, its second-line centre. For San Jose, Darnell Nurse was described as a likely game-time decision later in the trip. Our NHL injury report tracks every other club.
Players to watch
Alex Nedeljkovic, San Jose. Two starts, two wins, a .933 and a 1.90 against Askarov’s .848. Which of them plays may decide this.
Kirill Marchenko, Toronto. A hat trick against Buffalo on 15 October, and Toronto’s most dangerous forward this month.
Nolan Allan, San Jose. In for Nurse on the blue line, and about to face a Toronto side that has scored 28 in eight.
Score prediction
Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 San Jose Sharks. The Leafs are at home against a team at the end of a road trip, though the recent series says it’ll be close.
Maple Leafs vs Sharks prediction
A narrow call for Toronto. San Jose is playing its second game in three nights at the end of a trip, and has scored only 19 goals in seven.
Against that, the Sharks own the recent series, and Toronto has eight names on its injury list and Bobrovsky at .896. Our lean: Toronto, and the under if the total sits at 6 or higher. The four games in that run produced 5, 5, 11 and 5 goals, so three of them finished under six. That cuts against this season’s form, though: Toronto’s games have averaged 7.0 goals and San Jose’s 6.3. Both clubs’ standing is on our NHL power rankings, and Monday’s other games are on the NHL schedule.
