The Hellebuyck era is over and the Jets keep losing by one

The Jets are 4-4-3 and twenty-third. They have lost five of six, every one by a single goal. Close, every time. Montréal beat them 2-1 at the Heritage Classic on Sunday. Before that: 3-2 past regulation in Dallas, 2-1 at St Louis, 3-2 to Carolina, 4-3 past regulation in Chicago. They have 27 goals for and 31 against.

Connor Hellebuyck was traded to New Jersey on Friday 23 October. That ended a holdout that began when he did not report to camp in September. Winnipeg took back Dawson Mercer, Nick Bjugstad, goaltender Nico Daws, prospect Alexander Command and two draft picks. Mercer made his Jets debut on Sunday.

That leaves Stuart Skinner as the starter by default, and he has done well at a .911 across eight with 19 saves on 21 outdoors. Josh Morrissey is week to week with a wrist injury and dated around 5 November. Vladislav Namestnikov is on injured reserve until early November.

How they compare

Florida finished two points clear of Winnipeg last season. It scored a quarter of a goal a game more. The Jets conceded less and had the worse power play by a point. These two finished much closer than their reputations suggest.

Florida has three regulars out and has just won in Chicago

The Panthers are 6-4-2 and won 3-2 at Chicago on Sunday. Akira Schmid made 19 saves. The two before that were a 4-0 defeat in Pittsburgh and a 5-1 defeat in Ottawa. The two weeks before that produced an 8-3 and a 7-3.

Aleksander Barkov is on long-term injured reserve until 27 November. Brad Marchand is out until 21 November and Jacob Markstrom until 4 November. Jonah Gadjovich is gone until the end of that month. Three regulars, three November dates. Gustav Forsling, day to day a week ago, played 23 minutes on Sunday.

That leaves Schmid, 3-2-1 with a .872 across five starts, and Cooper Black behind him. Florida’s goal difference is minus two on a winning record. That is what an 8-3 and a 4-0 in the same two weeks produce.

Four of the last five finished at five goals or fewer

Winnipeg leads the recent record 19 wins to 15. It has taken three of the last five, including both one-goal games last January.

Those five produced 3, 3, 9, 5 and 3 goals, an average of 4.6. That is the lowest head-to-head average on Tuesday’s card. Four of the five finished at five or fewer.

Team news

Who starts in goal is an open question. Florida Panthers has split between Schmid (5 starts, .872) and Black (1, .857), and Winnipeg Jets has split between Skinner (8 starts, .911) and Stevenson (3, .893). Neither number is a promise about tonight, and the line moves the moment a club confirms its starter.

Winnipeg is the side we would take. Skinner’s .911 against Schmid’s .872 is the biggest edge on the page. Florida is without its captain, its leading forward and its starting goaltender. Losing by one goal is not the same as being outplayed.

Against that, five defeats in six is a run, whatever the margins, and the books make Florida the favourite anyway. Our lean: Winnipeg, and the under. The line has come in at 5.5 rather than 6. Four of the last five meetings would still have cleared it, and the last two finished 2-1 and 2-1.
