Vancouver has conceded 45 goals in ten games

The Canucks are 2-7-1 and the goals against figure is the worst in the league. Six straight road defeats took them through Carolina, New Jersey, the Rangers, Long Island, Florida and Tampa Bay. They lost the last of them 4-2 with fourteen shots on goal.

Kevin Lankinen has a .807 and a 6.40 across six starts and is 1-6-0. Leevi Meriläinen has four at a .925 and a 2.51. The numbers are not close, and the club has kept going back to Lankinen anyway.

Thatcher Demko remains out after hip surgery in January with no clear timetable. Marco Rossi is day to day with an illness. The one thing in Vancouver’s favour is that it is finally at home, where it hasn’t played since 4 October.

Carolina finished fifty-five points clear of Vancouver last season and killed penalties nine points better. That’s the widest gap in any game tonight.

Carolina has lost twice in regulation all season

The Hurricanes are 7-2-1 with 36 goals for and 24 against. They had won seven in a row before Sunday. Calgary beat them 3-2 on the second night of a back-to-back in western Canada.

Pyotr Kochetkov has won all five of his starts at a .912. Brandon Bussi has the other five and a .882, and took the Calgary start, so with a day between games this time Kochetkov is the likelier of the two.

Carolina is also doing this without Seth Jarvis, who scored 32 goals last season and is on injured reserve. Jordan Staal and Taylor Hall are out too. Mark Jankowski, who scored in Winnipeg on Saturday, has since been added to the list.

Four straight meetings have gone to Carolina, two of them with six goals or more, and the 7-2 on 8 October was the most emphatic.

Vancouver still leads the all-time series 24 wins to 18, a record built long before this run. The last two games in Vancouver went Carolina’s way too.

Who starts in goal is an open question. Carolina has split its starts evenly between Kochetkov (five, .912) and Bussi (five, .882), and Vancouver between Lankinen (six, .807) and Meriläinen (four, .925). Which of them starts is a coaching decision; the save percentages only show form.

For the other 30 clubs, see the NHL injury report.

Players to watch

Leevi Meriläinen, Vancouver. A .925 across four starts against Lankinen’s .807. Whether he starts may decide how close this is.

Pyotr Kochetkov, Carolina. Five starts, five wins, a .912. He has not lost a game he has started.

Elias Pettersson, Vancouver. Three goals on a side that has won twice in ten, including the one that made it 2-0 in Florida.

Score prediction

Carolina Hurricanes 5-2 Vancouver Canucks. Vancouver can’t keep the puck out, and home ice is the only argument against a wider margin.

Hurricanes vs Canucks prediction

This should be a comfortable Carolina win. The Hurricanes are 7-2-1 with two regulation defeats all season, they’ve beaten Vancouver four times running, and the Canucks have conceded 45 goals in ten games.

Vancouver’s hopes rest on being home at last and on Meriläinen getting the net. Our lean: Carolina, and the over if the total sits at 6.5 or lower. Vancouver’s games have averaged 7.5 goals and Carolina scored seven in the last meeting.

Both are placed in our weekly NHL power rankings, and you can find the rest of Tuesday’s games on the NHL schedule.
