Carolina is first and Kochetkov still has not lost a start
The Hurricanes are 9-2-2 with twenty points, the best record in the NHL. Still first. The goal difference is plus eighteen, and they won 4-0 in St Louis on Saturday. Two days earlier they had lost 6-5 in a shootout in Edmonton from in front.
Pyotr Kochetkov is 7-0-0 across seven starts with a .916 after a 24-save shutout at the weekend. Brandon Bussi is 2-2-2 with a .865 across six. Near the same workload, very different results.
Jordan Staal is out until December with a calf problem. Mark Jankowski is dated 29 October, so he misses this one. Taylor Hall came off injured reserve on Monday. Alexander Nikishin signed a one-year deal on Sunday but has not joined the team. Rod Brind’Amour says he needs a mini training camp.
How they compare
| 2025-26 | Boston Bruins | Carolina Hurricanes |
|---|---|---|
| Record | 45-27-10 | 53-22-7 |
| Points | 100 | 113 |
| Goals for per game | 3.32 | 3.61 |
| Goals against per game | 3.05 | 2.93 |
| Power play | 23.4% | 24.9% |
| Penalty kill | 77.0% | 80.5% |
Carolina finished thirteen points clear of Boston last season. It conceded a tenth of a goal a game less. Carolina had the better power play by a point and a half and the better penalty kill by three and a half. It was the better side on paper and remains the one above in the standings.
Boston is second, plus twenty-two, and completely healthy
The Bruins are 9-2-1 with a goal difference of plus twenty-two, the best in the league. Twelve goals in two games: 6-0 over Nashville on Thursday, 6-4 over San Jose on Saturday. Five wins in six.
Not one Boston player is on the injury report. At this point in the season that is close to unique, and it is part of why the goal difference is four better than the side above them.
Jeremy Swayman has nine starts at a .920. Michael DiPietro has three at a .941, including a 28-save shutout of Nashville. A week ago both were clearly better than either Carolina option. Kochetkov’s shutout has closed that gap. A few hundredths, now.
Carolina has won three of the last five, all of them tight
| Date | Result | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 7 Apr 2026 | Carolina 6-5 (OT) | Boston |
| 17 Nov 2025 | Carolina 3-1 | Carolina |
| 1 Nov 2025 | Boston 2-1 | Carolina |
| 5 Apr 2025 | Boston 5-1 | Carolina |
| 6 Mar 2025 | Carolina 3-2 | Boston |
Boston leads the all-time series 67 wins to 61. Carolina has taken three of the last five, and four of those were decided by two goals or fewer.
Those five produced 11, 4, 3, 6 and 5 goals, an average of 5.8. Only the 6-5 cleared a line of 6.5, so the average is carried by one game.
Team news
| Club | Player | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Carolina | Jordan Staal | Out, calf, on injured reserve to December |
| Carolina | Mark Jankowski | Out, lower body, dated 29 October |
| Carolina | Alexander Nikishin | Signed 25 October, not yet with the team, no date |
| Carolina | Taylor Hall | Available, reinstated from injured reserve on 26 October |
| Boston | None listed | No Boston player is on the injury report |
Who starts in goal is an open question. Boston Bruins has split between Swayman (9 starts, .920) and DiPietro (3, .941), and Carolina Hurricanes has split between Kochetkov (7 starts, .916) and Bussi (6, .865). Which of them dresses is a coaching decision, not a statistical one, so the numbers below are context rather than a forecast.
For the other 30 clubs, see the NHL injury report.
Players to watch
Pyotr Kochetkov, Carolina. 7-0-0 across seven starts and a shutout on Saturday, the only unbeaten goaltender on Tuesday’s card.
Jeremy Swayman, Boston. A .920 across nine behind the best defensive record in the league.
Taylor Hall, Carolina. Off injured reserve on Monday after a week out. A top-nine option for a side already scoring four a game.
Score prediction
Boston Bruins 3-2 Carolina Hurricanes. Boston has the better goal difference, the deeper goaltending and a clean injury list.
Bruins vs Hurricanes prediction
Boston is the side we would take. The goal difference is plus twenty-two against plus eighteen. Both of its goaltenders are at .920 or better, and no Boston player is unavailable. The Canadian books make the visitor the value side in a game between the league’s two best records.
The case for Carolina is home ice, first place and Kochetkov’s unbeaten record. Saturday’s shutout made that harder to argue with. Our lean: Boston, and the under if the total sits at 6 or higher. Four of the last five meetings were decided by two goals or fewer. Four of the five finished at six or under. Against that, Boston’s last two games produced six and ten goals. The under is the weaker half.
Both are placed in our weekly NHL power rankings, and you can find the rest of Tuesday’s games on the NHL schedule.
Puck drop is 8:00pm ET on Tuesday 27 October 2026 at Lenovo Center in Raleigh.
