Vegas is fifth, has scored five goals in three games and may have Marner back

The Golden Knights are 8-4-1 with a goal difference of plus nine. The last three: 2-6 at home to Tampa Bay, 2-6 in St Louis, 1-2 in overtime in Columbus on Saturday. Five goals in three games. Before that they had won three straight by a combined 17-6.

Mitch Marner missed the road trip for the birth of his second child. He was back at Monday’s practice on the second line. Local reporting expects him to play; one wire report still listed him out. Parker Wotherspoon is out until 8 November.

The crease is split. Carter Hart has eight starts at a .889 and Adin Hill five at a .882. Hill has the better record at 4-1-0. Hart made 18 saves on 20 in Columbus. Neither number explains fifth place.

Vegas finished four points behind Ottawa last season despite a better goal difference. It had the better penalty kill by almost six points. Ottawa had the better power play, which is where its 8-4-0 start has come from.

Ottawa opens a five-game road trip with Ullmark out until November

The Senators are 8-4-0 and seventh, and the record flatters them. The goal difference is plus four. They beat the Rangers 7-4 on Saturday with a Drake Batherson hat trick. The two home games before that went 6-2 to San Jose and 5-1 over Florida.

Linus Ullmark is on injured reserve and dated 7 November. Samuel Ersson is 0-3-0 with a .835 and has conceded six and seven in two of his three starts. That is the problem. Jonas Johansson, recalled from Belleville, stopped 25 of 29 in the win over New York.

Thomas Chabot took full practice on Monday on an extra pairing, and Travis Green said he is close without committing to Tuesday. The call comes after the morning skate. William Eklund is out until January. This is the first of five straight on the road.

Four of the last five cleared 6.5, and Ottawa has won three

Vegas leads the all-time series 12 wins to 4. Ottawa has taken three of the last five, including a 7-1 in Las Vegas in January.

Those five produced 8, 7, 5, 10 and 7 goals, an average of 7.4. Four of the five cleared 6.5, which with Ullmark out of the Ottawa net is worth noting.

Who starts in goal is an open question. Ottawa Senators has split between Ersson (3 starts, .835) and Johansson (1, .862), and Vegas Golden Knights has split between Hart (8 starts, .889) and Hill (5, .882). Season rates say little about who takes the warm-up, and the market reprices as soon as a club names someone.

Everyone else’s absentees are on the NHL injury report.

Players to watch

Jonas Johansson, Ottawa. One start, one win, 25 saves on 29. A claim on the net ahead of Ersson’s .835, if the coach wants one.

Mitch Marner, Vegas. Back from a two-game absence and expected on the second line. His side has managed five goals since he left.

Drake Batherson, Ottawa. Three goals on Saturday, in a side that has to outscore its goaltending for another two weeks.

Score prediction

Vegas Golden Knights 5-3 Ottawa Senators. Home ice, and Ottawa is almost two weeks from getting its goaltender back.

Golden Knights vs Senators prediction

Our side is Vegas, with less conviction than a week ago. Ottawa’s goal difference is plus four on an 8-4-0 record. It has conceded six and seven at home inside ten days. Ersson and Johansson have one NHL win between them this season.

The case for Ottawa is a 7-1 in this building in January and three wins in the last five. The Golden Knights have also found the net five times in three games. Our lean: Vegas, and the over, which is the stronger half. Four of the last five between these two went past 6.5. Vegas has conceded fourteen in three games, and Ottawa’s crease is a .835 or a one-start recall.

For how these two measure against the league, see the NHL power rankings. The NHL schedule covers the rest of Tuesday’s games.
