Toronto is winning again with nine players unavailable

The Leafs are 5-4-2 and have won both games since the weekend. That is 3-1 against San Jose on Sunday and 6-2 in Columbus on Monday. The Columbus game was the odd one. Toronto was outshot 38-22 and won by four. That does not usually hold.

Nine players are on the injury list, the longest in the league. John Tavares is out to late November with a lower-body injury. Max Domi is out to 21 November after complications from summer back surgery. Chris Tanev, Dakota Joshua and Miles Wood are all out. Jake McCabe is day to day with a facial injury.

The goaltending has been split. Sergei Bobrovsky has seven starts at a .902 and Anthony Stolarz four at a .898. It was Stolarz who stopped 36 of 38 in Columbus.

Toronto finished one point ahead of New York last season and conceded six tenths of a goal a game more. Both have started better than that, but the Leafs are still the leakier of the two and the Rangers have the better goal difference.

New York has the best save percentage on the board and no Shesterkin

The Rangers are 7-3-1 and have won four of five. The exception was a 7-1 defeat at New Jersey on 15 October, which sits oddly against everything else they have done.

Igor Shesterkin is out for the season. His leg was jammed into the post against Washington. The club ruled him out a day later, with a return date into September 2027. Joonas Korpisalo is also on injured reserve until early November.

That has left Dylan Garand, who has a .929 across six starts. New York beat Vancouver 6-2 and Anaheim 5-2 either side of the New Jersey defeat. The record is not being carried by the goaltender alone.

Toronto has won three of the last five

Toronto leads the all-time series 369 wins to 298. It has taken three of the last five, including the most recent meeting 4-3 at Scotiabank Arena in March.

Those five produced 7, 8, 3, 7 and 5 goals. That averages six. Three of the five cleared a line of 6.5 and two did not. That is about as close to a coin flip as a head-to-head gets.

Who starts in goal is an open question. New York Rangers has split between Garand (6 starts, .929) and Shesterkin (5, .927), and Toronto Maple Leafs has split between Bobrovsky (7 starts, .902) and Stolarz (4, .898). A save percentage is a season aggregate rather than a lineup, so treat either name as a possibility and not a plan.

Players to watch

Dylan Garand, New York. A .929 across six starts in a job he was third in line for three weeks ago.

Auston Matthews, Toronto. Eight goals in eleven games, three of them on the power play.

Morgan Rielly, Toronto. Three assists in Columbus on Monday, and the player Toronto leans on most with Tanev out.

Score prediction

Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 New York Rangers. Toronto is at home and scoring, and the market has this close to even.

Rangers vs Maple Leafs prediction

Toronto is the side we would take, narrowly. It has won the last two and it is at home. The Rangers have one bad night in five that nobody has explained properly.

The case against is the goaltending. Garand has been the best of the four netminders here by save percentage. Toronto also gave up 38 shots in a game it won by four, which is not repeatable. Our lean: Toronto, and we would leave the total alone at 6.5. The last five meetings split three-two over that line, and nothing in the current form breaks the tie.

Our NHL power rankings has all 32 in order, and the rest of Thursday’s games is on the NHL schedule.
