Flyers vs Senators odds

This game hadn’t been priced by a Canadian book when the page was written. NHL lines usually go up the night before or that morning. When this one does, it’ll be on our NHL odds page, and priced daily picks are on NHL predictions.

Linus Ullmark has started six games and won six games

Ottawa’s 6-2-0 has a simple explanation. Ullmark hasn’t lost any of his six starts, with a .949 save percentage and a 1.20 goals-against average, while Samuel Ersson has lost both of his at .829.

The goaltending hides a thin attack. The Senators have 23 goals in eight games, and one of their losses was a 7-2 home defeat to St. Louis on 13 October with Ersson in net. Take that game out and they’ve conceded thirteen in seven.

Thursday’s 2-1 shootout win over the Islanders was typical. Ottawa was outshot, Ullmark stopped 20 of 21, Ridly Greig scored in regulation and Shane Pinto won it in the shootout.

Last season these two finished a point apart, so it’s too early to write Philadelphia off. Special teams separated them: Ottawa’s power play ran at 24.0 per cent and Philadelphia’s at 15.7, the lowest of the twelve clubs in Saturday’s Canadian games.

Philadelphia is 0-6-3 and it is not the goaltending

Eleven goals for, 33 against and three points from a possible eighteen, with six of the nine losses in regulation. The run includes a 5-1 loss in Boston, 4-1 at home to Carolina and 2-1 in Detroit on Thursday.

Joseph Woll is 0-3-2 with a .916 save percentage, and Dan Vladar 0-3-1 at .875. Woll’s numbers would win games for most teams, and the Flyers just aren’t scoring for him.

It doesn’t help that Travis Konecny, Philadelphia’s best forward, is on injured reserve and will miss at least three games. Cam York is out, and Rasmus Ristolainen and Nikita Grebenkin are on injured reserve.

Ottawa has won the last six meetings, the last five by one goal

Ottawa has won six straight against Philadelphia, most recently 2-1 at the Canadian Tire Centre on 8 October. The last five were all one-goal games and three went to overtime, two of them in Philadelphia, so the run is real but the margins have been thin.

All-time it’s almost level, 66 wins to 64 for Ottawa. None of the last five meetings had more than seven goals, and three of them had exactly three.

Ottawa’s defence is short too, with Sanderson, Matinpalo and MacDermid all out. The difference is that Ullmark has covered for it, and Philadelphia has nobody covering for Konecny. Every club’s absentees are listed on our NHL injury report.

Players to watch

Linus Ullmark, Ottawa. Six starts, six wins, a .949 and a 1.20. He’s been one of the best goaltenders in the league so far.

Tim Stützle, Ottawa. Five goals and 11 points in eight games, nearly twice as many points as any teammate on a team that isn’t scoring freely.

Joseph Woll, Philadelphia. A .916 and nothing to show for it. His record will change quickly once Philadelphia starts scoring.

Score prediction

Ottawa Senators 3-1 Philadelphia Flyers. Six straight wins in the series and the better goaltender on form, against a team with eleven goals in nine games and no quick fix.

Flyers vs Senators prediction

We’d back Ottawa: 6-2-0, six straight in the series and a goaltender who hasn’t lost a start. Philadelphia is winless in nine and without Konecny, York, Ristolainen and Grebenkin.

Woll is good enough to keep it close, and each of the last five meetings was decided by a goal. Our lean: Ottawa, and the under if the total sits at 5.5 or higher. Philadelphia is scoring 1.2 goals a game. For where both clubs stand, see our NHL power rankings; the rest of Saturday is on the NHL schedule.
