USA vs Peru: what’s at stake?
This is the first time the United States have played since Belgium took them apart at Lumen Field, a 4-1 round-of-16 defeat that closed out a World Cup summer the country had otherwise enjoyed. The group stage had gone about as well as it reasonably could. Top spot in a section containing Paraguay, Australia and Türkiye, then Bosnia and Herzegovina dispatched 2-0 in the round of 32 for a first knockout win on home soil. Belgium were the reminder of how far there still is to travel.
What follows is a new cycle rather than a victory lap. Pochettino has signed through 2030 and opens a four-game fall window — Peru first, then Chile, Mexico and Canada — inside 11 days, which is less a run of friendlies than an audition process conducted at speed. Peru, meanwhile, are at the beginning of a rebuild of their own. They finished ninth in CONMEBOL qualifying on 12 points and watched the tournament from home.

Pochettino has named a deliberately rebuilt roster for the window and has been clear that minutes will be spread across all four games, so expect changes here and again in St. Louis on Tuesday. Peru arrive with a squad in transition of their own, the generation that reached Russia in 2018 having largely moved on. Neither coach will put out anything close to a settled XI, which is worth holding in mind before reading too much into whatever happens in Orlando.
