Pochettino closes the window with a chance to finish it 4-0. Peru were beaten 4-1, Chile 4-2, Mexico 3-0 on Saturday in Glendale — eleven goals, three wins, and a performance against the old rival that was the most convincing of the lot. For a squad he has rotated hard across eleven days, that is close to the best case.
Canada have had the quieter window and arguably the better one defensively. Jesse Marsch’s side beat Chile 1-0 in Toronto and Peru 2-0 in Montréal without conceding, following a World Cup summer in which they reached the round of 16 on home soil. Two clean sheets in two is not nothing.
What Tuesday offers is the first meaningful test of either record. Canada have not faced a side with this much of the ball or this many runners; the United States have not faced a defence that has kept them out yet.
Team news and talking points
Both coaches have rotated throughout and both have said the window is about information, so neither XI should be read as a first-choice side. The difference on Tuesday is that this is the last of the four for the United States and the one Pochettino will most want, which usually means a stronger team than the fixture strictly requires. Canada are better than the price suggests and the clean sheets are real, but they were built against Chile and Peru, who between them have lost five of six this window. The United States have scored at least three every time out and get to finish the window at home with a full crowd. Canada should get one — they have scored in both games and will carry a threat on the break. Prediction: USA 2-1.
