Mexico vs Chile: what’s at stake?
Rafael Márquez took the job after the World Cup and has three games to show for it: 1-1 with Colombia in Baltimore, 1-1 with Peru, and a 3-0 defeat to the United States in Glendale on Saturday that was as one-sided as the scoreline. Two goals scored in three matches, five conceded, no wins.
That is the context for Tuesday rather than Chile, who are the more convenient opponent at the right time. They lost 4-2 to the United States in St. Louis and 1-0 to Canada in Toronto, and arrive at the end of a North American trip with nothing much to show for it either.
The MexTour closes at the Coliseum, and a first win under Márquez would change the temperature around a squad that has not had a good ten days. Mexico remain overwhelming favourites with their own crowd behind them.
Team news and talking points
Márquez has rotated across the tour and is still working out his best front line, which is the clearest problem: two goals in three games is not a rotation issue so much as a structural one. Chile have the same complaint from the other direction, having scored twice in two and been beaten in both. Mexico should win this. Chile are poor, travelling and beaten twice already, and the crowd will be overwhelmingly green. What Mexico have not done all window is score freely, and nothing about three games under a new coach suggests that changes tonight. A tight, controlled win is the likeliest version. Prediction: Mexico 2-0.
