Colombia came out of the World Cup with more credit than most. They topped Group K, beating Uzbekistan 3-1 and DR Congo 1-0 either side of a goalless draw with Portugal, then saw off Ghana 1-0 in the round of 32. The run ended against Switzerland in the round of 16, 0-0 after extra time and 4-3 on penalties — a tournament exit without a defeat in normal time.
Paraguay’s summer was harder won. They came through Group D, the section the United States topped, and reached the knockout rounds the long way. What follows for both is the same thing: a new cycle, a short October window, and a coach taking looks at players rather than chasing a result.
This is the second of two for Colombia in the window, after a 1-1 draw with Mexico in Baltimore last Sunday. Paraguay arrive off a 2-0 win away in Bolivia on the same day. Neither has lost since the tournament.
Team news and talking points
Both squads were in action on September 27 and reconvene on five days’ rest, so rotation is the safest assumption on either side rather than a settled XI. Harrison is as close to a home fixture as a neutral venue gets for Colombia: the New York metropolitan area holds one of the largest Colombian populations in the United States, and the Tricolor have drawn well there before.
