This is Matchday 1 of the 2026/27 Nations League, and Group A3 has been drawn about as unkindly as it could be: England, Spain, Croatia and Czechia, home and away, across September, October and November. Both of Saturday’s sides finished the World Cup in the top three. Only one of them got to lift anything.
Spain won it, beating Argentina 1-0 in New Jersey with a Ferran Torres goal in the 106th minute, against ten men for the whole of extra time. England finished third, which undersells how their tournament actually went. They lost a semi-final 2-1 to Argentina having led through Anthony Gordon, conceding to Enzo Fernández on 85 minutes and Lautaro Martínez two minutes into stoppage time after Thomas Tuchel had switched to a back five. Then they beat France 6-4 in the third-place game, with a Bukayo Saka hat-trick and a Jude Bellingham solo goal, for England’s best men’s World Cup finish since 1966.
Team news and talking points
The subplot here is Tuchel, and specifically the decision that cost England a World Cup final. Going 5-4-1 with a lead against Argentina invited exactly the pressure that beat them, and he has since accepted England “got too passive” after scoring while insisting he has no regrets. How he sets up against a better side than Argentina, at home, on Matchday 1, is the most interesting question of the window. Spain arrive with the opposite problem: a squad that has won everything and now has to find a reason to keep going.
