Published: 9:00, 14 May 2024

We’re in a new era of the Premier League, with more than just the usual clubs being seriously in with a chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

Over the years, fans have grown so used to the Champions League spots consisting of four of Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham — the so-called ‘Big Six’. But last season, only three of those made it, with Newcastle being the first to break the hegemony since Leicester City in 2015/16.

It wasn’t just Newcastle challenging either; Brighton was climbing the table, while Aston Villa were also close. Liverpool finished fifth, Tottenham eighth and Chelsea down in 12th.

There was the chance for a potential fifth Champions League entry this season, but the Premier League look set to miss out on that. So, who is on their way to finishing in the top four as the end of the season draws nearer?

With Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool all confirming their places in next season’s Champions League, their is just one spot left. Recent results mean that Newcastle, Chelsea and Manchester United now mathematically can’t claim the fourth spot, so we are down to two.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa finished strongly last season to secure European football, but how would they fare in Unai Emery’s first full campaign in charge? The answer turned out to be pretty well. The Villans had been counted among the title race, sometimes leading the table. Things have slowed down a little, and while they are five points ahead of Tottenham, the London club now have a game in hand. Three points from their remaining match would guarantee them a spot in the UCL next season.

Tottenham

Tottenham entered the season uncertain about how they would do in Ange Postecoglou’s first campaign in the Premier League. They also lost Harry Kane in the summer, making the task harder for the Australian. But they have been brilliant in spells. Spurs have been playing attacking football, and fans have been craving and getting results. It hasn’t been perfect, but Tottenham have hit poor form at the wrong time with four consecutive defeats to Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. They do have a game in hand over Villa in fourth, but with a four-point gap and time running out, they may have to make do with a place in the Europa League.
