Result: Edmonton Oilers 3-1 San Jose Sharks
Mattias Ekholm’s first of the season was the only goal until the third, when Vasily Podkolzin and Alex Formenton scored inside two and a half minutes to put it away. Macklin Celebrini got San Jose on the board with nine minutes left. Connor McDavid picked up his tenth assist of the season on the Podkolzin goal.
Our pick: Edmonton. Correct on the winner, wrong on the shape, and the preview carried a fact it should not have. We took the over at 6.5 or lower and four goals followed. We also wrote that San Jose was without Celebrini. He played, and he scored. The argument rested on half of San Jose’s route to a result having gone, and that was not the case.
The preview as published before the game follows.
Edmonton has lost once in four games and is missing four forwards, a defenceman and a goaltender. Twenty-two goals have gone in anyway.
Oilers vs Sharks is the busiest search of the weekend, and the reason is sitting at the top of the scoring charts. Connor McDavid has twelve points.

Oilers vs Sharks odds
Nothing was posted in Canada on 8 October. Our NHL odds page carries the boards as they go up, and the projected goaltenders are on our NHL starting goalies page.
Edmonton’s top three are carrying an injury list
McDavid, Bouchard and Draisaitl have 32 points between them in four games. Evan Bouchard has six goals from the blue line, which is more than nineteen clubs have managed as a team.
Wednesday in Anaheim is the game to look at. Edmonton went down 2-0 and scored five in the second period, Draisaitl picking up four assists in twenty minutes.
The absences are the story underneath. Zach Hyman is out around two weeks and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is on injured reserve. Matt Savoie and Mattias Janmark are both unavailable. Frederik Andersen isn’t expected back until December.
That leaves Devon Levi, who’s won all three of his starts at a .863 save percentage. Winning at that rate isn’t sustainable and Edmonton knows it.
How they compare

San Jose conceded 41 more goals than Edmonton last season and has closed some of that gap already.
San Jose is without the player the rebuild is built on
Macklin Celebrini is out. He missed Thursday’s 3-2 win in St Louis and is now listed out rather than day to day. He has five assists in three games.
Will Smith has three points and Igor Chernyshov the same. Luca Cagnoni has chipped in from defence. This is a much younger roster than the one that finished 24th, and it has already won two of three.
Yaroslav Askarov is 2-1-0 at .862, though Alex Nedeljkovic took Thursday’s win in St Louis. Two years ago Askarov was the most sought-after goaltending prospect in hockey. This is the season he has to prove it.
One name that won’t appear: William Eklund is an Ottawa Senator now.

Six Edmonton names and four San Jose ones, and Celebrini is now out rather than doubtful. League-wide availability is on our NHL injury report.
Players to watch
Connor McDavid. Twelve points in four games and three different linemates already, because of who’s unavailable.
Evan Bouchard. Six goals from defence in four games, and two of them in Anaheim.
Macklin Celebrini. Out, and the single biggest reason this game got easier for Edmonton.
Yaroslav Askarov. Every minute so far, and a .862 that needs to climb.
Score prediction
Edmonton Oilers 5-3 San Jose Sharks. Edmonton is scoring five and a half a game with half a forward group missing, and San Jose is without Celebrini. Neither goaltender has been reliable, which is why this lands high rather than tight.
Oilers vs Sharks prediction
Edmonton should win. It’s taken three of the last four meetings. It has the three best players on the ice on Saturday, and it just scored five in a period.
What gives pause is the goaltending. Levi’s .863 and Askarov’s .862 are both numbers that lose games. Edmonton’s depth is thin enough that one more injury reshapes the roster.
San Jose’s route was Celebrini and Askarov stealing a period, and half of that has gone. The Sharks beat Edmonton at home last season doing roughly that.
Our lean: Edmonton, and the over if the total sits at 6.5 or lower. Three of the four meetings last season cleared seven and neither goaltender is stopping enough. Where both sit is on our NHL power rankings.
Puck drop is 4:00pm ET on Saturday 10 October 2026 at SAP Center in San Jose, which is 1:00pm local time and 2:00pm MT in Edmonton.
No. He missed Thursday’s 3-2 win in St Louis with a lower-body injury and is now listed out.
Devon Levi has started three of the four games and won all three, though at a .863 save percentage. Frederik Andersen isn’t expected back until December.
Edmonton won three of the four meetings. San Jose’s win came at home in February, 5-4.
Twelve in four games, three goals and nine assists, which leads the league.
