Result: Utah Mammoth 5-4 Toronto Maple Leafs
Seven goals went in during the second period. Utah led 3-0 through Daniil But, Vincent Trocheck and a shorthanded Mikhail Sergachev strike before Toronto answered through Auston Matthews and Jack Roslovic, and MacKenzie Weegar restored the three-goal margin with 40 seconds of the period left. John Tavares and Gavin McKenna made it a one-goal game in the third. Anthony Stolarz, Toronto’s goaltender, picked up the assist on the Tavares power-play goal.
Our pick: Utah. Correct. The over was right too, with nine goals, and we had said the goaltending on both sides was why this would land high rather than tight. Toronto scoring four and losing is the version of that we did not picture.
The preview as published before the game follows.
Utah has more points than Toronto, a better goal difference and the fourth-best power play in the league. It also beat the Leafs 6-1 the last time they came to Salt Lake City.
Mammoth vs Maple Leafs is the biggest search of Tuesday’s slate, and the reason is that nobody in Canada is quite sure what Utah is yet.

Utah is not a curiosity any more
Clayton Keller has seven points in five games. Nick Schmaltz has five goals, Dylan Guenther six points and Mikhail Sergachev six from the blue line. Four players already in double figures for shots.
That is a top six most clubs would take, and it is why Utah finished 15th last season with the best goal difference of anyone outside the top ten.
Karel Vejmelka has taken three of the five starts at .892. Sebastian Cossa has the other two. Neither is settled, which is the one soft spot.
Toronto will remember the last visit. Utah won 6-1 in January, one of the heaviest defeats the Leafs took all season.

Utah finished 14 points above Toronto last season and has started better again.
Toronto’s goaltending has split in two
Anthony Stolarz is 2-0-0. Sergei Bobrovsky is 0-2-1. That is not really a judgement on Bobrovsky, who made 40 saves on 43 in the shootout defeat in Vegas, but it is the pattern so far.
William Nylander leads the scoring on six points and Auston Matthews has six of his own. Kirill Marchenko, who came from Columbus in the Matthew Knies trade, has four.
Gavin McKenna is the one Canada is watching. First overall in June, and his first NHL goal and first NHL assist arrived inside ten minutes of the same comeback against Nashville.
Max Domi and Dakota Joshua are both on long-term injured reserve and Oliver Ekman-Larsson is day to day, so the depth behind that top line is thin.

Players to watch
Clayton Keller. Seven points in five and the player Utah built around before anyone else arrived.
Nick Schmaltz. Five goals already, which is more than any Leaf.
Gavin McKenna. Eighteen years old, first overall, and two NHL points inside ten minutes of each other.
Auston Matthews. Six points and the overtime winner against Nashville.
Score prediction
Toronto Maple Leafs 3-4 Utah Mammoth. Utah has the better record, the deeper forward group and home ice in a building where it beat Toronto 6-1 last season. Toronto’s goaltending is the question that decides whether this is close.
Mammoth vs Maple Leafs prediction
Utah should be favoured. It has more points, a better goal difference, four forwards producing and only one player unavailable.
Toronto’s case is Matthews and Nylander, who can win a game between them on any night, and Stolarz, who has not lost a game he has started.
The worry for Toronto is everything behind that. Two forwards on long-term injured reserve, a defenceman day to day, and a goaltender in Bobrovsky who has taken all three defeats despite playing well in one of them.
Our lean: Utah, and the over if the total sits at 6 or lower. Both meetings last season had seven goals or more, and neither club is defending well. Where both sit is on our NHL power rankings.
Puck drop is 9:00pm ET on Tuesday 13 October 2026 at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, which is 7:00pm local time.
One win each. Toronto won 5-3 in November and Utah won 6-1 at home in January.
No. Knies is a Columbus Blue Jacket. Kirill Marchenko came the other way in that trade and has four points for the Leafs.
Anthony Stolarz is 2-0-0 and Sergei Bobrovsky 0-2-1. Bobrovsky made 40 saves in the shootout defeat in Vegas.
Utah is 3-2-0 with 18 goals in five games. Toronto is 2-2-1.
