Magic vs Raptors: Prediction, Team News and No Banchero or Leonard

Orlando Magic vs Toronto Raptors prediction and picks

Both rosters have been raided by the injury list inside the first week. Paolo Banchero is out for four to six weeks with a high-ankle sprain, and Kawhi Leonard is out for multiple weeks with swelling in his left knee. Orlando has also lost Jalen Suggs to a bone bruise. So tonight’s Magic vs Raptors game is a test of depth, and Toronto’s looks a little deeper.

The Raptors are 2-1 and the Magic are 1-2. Both last played on Sunday. They meet again on Friday in Toronto, that one in NBA Cup group play.

Orlando won in New York without Banchero

Orlando opened with two home losses, 132-125 to Atlanta and 115-93 to Minnesota. Banchero scored 35 in the first of them. He didn’t play on Sunday, and Orlando still went into Madison Square Garden and won 111-102.

Franz Wagner carried that night with 23 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists. Desmond Bane added 22. The bench did the rest: Tristan da Silva scored 19 and Anthony Black hit five of his seven threes for 18. It’s a strong answer, but Suggs played 34 minutes in it and won’t play here.

Toronto lost its shape in Minnesota

The Raptors beat Chicago 135-92 and won 112-102 in Washington, where Scottie Barnes had 28 points and 14 rebounds. Then Leonard sat on Sunday, and the Timberwolves won 117-94.

Barnes went scoreless in 28 minutes that night. Ja’Kobe Walter took Leonard’s start and made five of eight threes for 22 points. RJ Barrett, the club’s one Canadian, leads it at 21 points a game. Immanuel Quickley is next on 18.

Last season the two finished a game apart, Toronto 46-36 and Orlando 45-37. Both went out in the first round in seven games, the Magic to Detroit and the Raptors to Cleveland.

Players to watch

Franz Wagner, Orlando. With Banchero and Suggs out, the offence runs through him. In New York he had nine assists, his most this season.

Scottie Barnes, Toronto. Two games of 23 and 28 points, then none in Minnesota. Without Leonard, Toronto needs the first version.

Ja’Kobe Walter, Toronto. He’s the likeliest starter in Leonard’s place again. Three-point shooting is the swing in his game.

Score prediction

Raptors 113-106 Magic. We start from last season’s ratings and home court, which make Toronto about a four-point favourite. Then we take Banchero and Suggs out of Orlando’s side and Leonard out of Toronto’s. Orlando loses more, because it loses both its lead scorer and its best perimeter defender.

Magic vs Raptors prediction

Toronto’s case rests on home court and on Barrett, Quickley and Barnes, three healthy scorers who have each had a 20-point night already, against an Orlando team whose two main creators are in street clothes. Orlando’s case is Sunday’s win and a bench that shot well in it. We don’t trust that second part to repeat.

Our pick: Toronto to win. On the spread we’d back the Raptors at -5.5 or shorter, and the under if the total sits at 224.5 or higher. Last season’s meetings averaged nearly 230, which is the case against that under. But both clubs have lost their main creators since.

Our player prop is Franz Wagner over 5.5 assists. He has five, five and nine, and with Suggs and Banchero out, more of the ball goes through him. The line was 5.5 at most books on Covers’ NBA prop board when we checked at 6:55 a.m. ET.

You’ll find the rest of Wednesday’s games on our NBA games tonight page, with tip-off times and the absences that could still change a game before it starts.
