Hockey is the sport Canadians bet most, and NHL betting in Canada now runs through whichever operator your province allows. Single-game wagers became legal across the country in August 2021. What changed after that was not the law but the shopfront: Ontario and Alberta opened to private sportsbooks, while most provinces still route every bet through the lottery corporation. How NHL betting works in Canada
Bill C-218 came into force on 27 August 2021 and removed the Criminal Code ban on single-event wagering. Before that, a hockey bet had to be part of a multi-leg parlay through a provincial lottery product. Now you can back one game on its own. Two provinces run open markets. The rest do not. Promoting a private operator to a reader in British Columbia or Quebec would be pointing them at something they cannot legally use, so we do not do it.

The NHL markets worth knowing
Five market types carry almost all the hockey volume. Each one behaves differently on a low-scoring sport, which is the part most new bettors miss.
- Moneyline. A straight pick on the winner, including overtime and shootout. Hockey moneylines sit closer together than other sports because one goal decides so many games. See our moneyline guide.
- Puck line. The hockey spread, almost always set at 1.5 goals. The favourite must win by two. Empty-net goals decide a lot of these, which is why the price swings so hard. Full detail in the puck line guide.
- Totals. Over or under on combined goals, usually 5.5 or 6. Goaltending and rest matter more than reputation here. See over/under betting.
- Props. Shots on goal, points, saves and anytime goalscorer. Read the props guide before you touch these.

How to bet on the NHL: what actually moves the number
Hockey rewards patience more than most sports. Goals are scarce, one hot goaltender flips a series, and the public piles onto the same handful of teams every night. A few habits do most of the work.
- Wait for the goalie. Confirmed starters often arrive late on game day. A backup behind a good team changes the total and the moneyline together.
- Respect the schedule. Back-to-backs, the second half of a long road trip and travel across three time zones all show up in the third period.
- Shop the line. In Ontario and Alberta you can hold accounts at several sportsbooks. Half a goal on the puck line or ten cents on a moneyline is the difference over a season.
- Be careful with same game parlays. Correlated legs feel clever and price badly. Our parlay guide shows what the combination really costs you.
- Track your bets. If you cannot say what your record is on unders, you do not have a read on unders.

The 2026-27 season and what we are watching
Carolina arrive as champions after beating the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 in the 2026 Final, with captain Jordan Staal taking the Conn Smythe at 37. Tampa Bay swept the individual honours: Nikita Kucherov won the Hart and Andrei Vasilevskiy the Vezina. The new season opens on 29 September 2026.

The puck line is hockey’s version of a point spread, and it is almost always set at 1.5 goals. Backing the favourite on the puck line means they need to win by two or more. Empty-net goals settle many of these bets.
It is a bet on which team wins the game, with overtime and the shootout included. Canadian sportsbooks show it in American odds, so a -140 favourite needs a $140 stake to return $100 in profit.
Nineteen in most provinces. Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec set the age at 18. The rule follows the province you are betting from, not the one you live in.
The regular season opens on 29 September 2026, with pre-season games from 19 September. Futures markets for the Cup and the individual awards are usually posted well before opening night.
It depends on your province, because most Canadians have only one legal option. Where you do have a choice, in Ontario and Alberta, compare the depth of the props menu and how early the sportsbook posts its lines, not just the sign-up promotion.
