Online gambling in Alberta is now legal and regulated. On 13 July 2026, the province opened a competitive, licensed market for online casino and sports betting, becoming the second in Canada — after Ontario — to let private operators run their sites legally. Is online gambling legal in Alberta?
Yes. Since 13 July 2026, anyone in Alberta aged 18 or over can legally play at licensed private online casinos and sportsbooks. Single-game sports betting has been legal across Canada since federal Bill C-218 came into force on 27 August 2021. What changed in Alberta is that the province now licenses private operators, rather than running only one government-run site.
Before the launch, the only legal option was PlayAlberta, the site run by the province. It still operates, but it now competes with dozens of licensed private brands.
What changed on 13 July 2026?
Alberta moved from a single government platform to an open, competitive market. Around 50 apps and sites were licensed ahead of launch, with 22 sites approved to go live on day one. More are expected to follow as they complete the licensing process.
The framework comes from Bill 48, the iGaming Alberta Act, passed in 2025. It set the rules for licensing, advertising and player protection, and created the body that runs the market.
Who regulates online gambling in Alberta?
Two bodies share the job. The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) regulates the market and sets the standards operators must meet. The Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) manages it commercially and holds the agreement with each licensed operator. It is the same split Ontario uses, where the AGCO regulates and iGaming Ontario manages.
What can you bet on in Alberta?
Licensed sites cover the two main products: online casino games — slots, live casino and table games — and sports betting, including single-game wagers on the NHL, NFL, soccer and more. Every licensed operator has to meet AGLC standards on fairness, payments and responsible gambling.
How does Alberta compare to Ontario?
Alberta is following the path Ontario set in April 2022. Both run open, private markets overseen by a regulator and a management body, and both are the exceptions in Canada — most other provinces still allow online gambling only through a single provincial operator. For Albertans, it means a real choice of licensed sites for the first time.
