Bombito’s game is built on power and volume. At Nice he made 147 clearances, 63 of them with his head, and won 66 aerial duels, the profile of a defender who relishes the dirty work in his own box. He pairs that with reach in the tackle, winning 32 of his challenges and stepping in as the last man six times across the season.

His MLS numbers at Colorado Rapids tell the same story, with 112 clearances, 58 aerial duels won and 35 tackles won. He is still developing the discipline that top-level defending demands, but the raw tools, aggression, aerial dominance and recovery speed, are exactly what Canada want against elite forwards.

For Canada, Bombito is the long-term answer at centre-back and a key part of the spine in front of which Alphonso Davies attacks down the left. A settled, physical defence is what gives the attacking talent of Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan the platform to play. More than aerials: the front-foot defending

Bombito’s heading gets the headlines, but his ground game is just as physical. In his debut Ligue 1 season at Nice he made 147 clearances and won 32 of 46 tackles — a 70% success rate — while being dribbled past just 12 times all campaign. He also threw himself in front of the ball repeatedly, blocking 24 shots and making six last-man tackles as the last line of defence.

The numbers were forged in MLS. At the Colorado Rapids he won 137 of his ground duels (distinct from his 35 tackles won), completed another 112 clearances and added 33 interceptions across 35 appearances. For a centre-back still in his early twenties, that combination of clearing, tackling and reading danger is why Canada trust him to anchor the defence on home soil.
