Jets vs Wild: Prediction, Team News and Quinn Hughes in Minnesota

Minnesota Wild vs Winnipeg Jets prediction and picks

Result: Winnipeg Jets 5-2 Minnesota Wild

Cole Perfetti scored twice and Winnipeg took the third period. Kirill Kaprizov answered both first-period Jets goals to make it 2-2 after twenty, then Perfetti’s power-play goal late in the second and strikes from Kyle Connor and Cole Koepke made it three unanswered. Mark Scheifele finished with a goal and two assists.

Our pick: Minnesota. Wrong. We had Minnesota on the better goaltending and the better start, and the Wild did match Winnipeg for a period before being outscored 3-0 across the last forty. Seven goals took the under down with it. Kaprizov scoring twice and still losing is the hardest way for that pick to go down.

The preview as published before the game follows.

Quinn Hughes leads Minnesota in scoring. That sentence would have read strangely a year ago, and it is the single biggest reason this game is worth watching in Canada.

Jets vs Wild also puts a club yet to lose in regulation against one that has conceded eight goals in four games. Something gives.

Hughes has made Minnesota a different team

Six points in four games from the blue line. Vancouver traded him 26 games into last season and he produced 53 points in 48 games for the Wild after the move, which is a rate almost no defenceman sustains.

Kirill Kaprizov has three goals and Jared Spurgeon four points. Blake Coleman, who came from Calgary in the summer, has three.

Jesper Wallstedt has started every game at .927 and is carrying the crease on his own. Filip Gustavsson is on injured reserve, so there is no cover.

Minnesota has conceded eight goals in four games, the second-best mark in the West. That is the number Winnipeg has to solve.

Winnipeg still has not lost in regulation

Kyle Connor has five goals in four games. He scored twice in the 3-2 win over Colorado, including the winner with a minute left, and Cole Perfetti has six points.

Stuart Skinner is 2-0-1 at .920. He arrived from two difficult seasons split between Edmonton and Pittsburgh and has been the steadier half of a crease that also gave Clay Stevenson a win.

Connor Hellebuyck has not played. Winnipeg suspended him on 17 September for failing to report after a trade request, and no end date has been set. Our Hellebuyck trade request page has the background.

Josh Morrissey is day to day. He plays 25 minutes a night and runs the first power play, so Winnipeg cannot simply slot someone in.

Players to watch

Quinn Hughes. Six points in four and the best defenceman on the ice by a distance.

Kyle Connor. Five goals in four games and the winner against Colorado.

Jesper Wallstedt. Every minute so far at .927, with no backup available.

Kirill Kaprizov. Three goals, and the player Winnipeg has never found an answer for.

Score prediction

Minnesota Wild 3-2 Winnipeg Jets. Minnesota has the better defenceman, the better goaltender so far and a defence conceding two a game. Winnipeg has home ice and a forward in Connor who is scoring at better than a goal a game.

Jets vs Wild prediction

This is the hardest game on Tuesday’s slate to call. Winnipeg has not lost in regulation and Minnesota has conceded eight in four.

Hughes is the difference on paper. He moves the puck better than anyone Winnipeg has, and with Morrissey day to day the gap on the blue line could be wide.

Winnipeg’s answer is Connor, who has scored in three of four, and a building where it took three of four points from Boston and Colorado inside a week.

Our lean: Minnesota, and the under if the total sits at 6 or higher. Three of the four meetings last season finished at seven goals or fewer and both clubs are defending well. Where each sits is on our NHL power rankings.
