Result: Edmonton Oilers 3-1 Seattle Kraken
Edmonton scored twice in the third to break it open. Owen Michaels opened, Bobby McMann levelled for Seattle, then Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid settled it late. Devon Levi took first star with 19 saves, his second win in three days.
Our pick: Edmonton. Correct. The over at 6 missed badly: four goals, in a game we expected to be open.
The preview as published before the game follows.
Oilers vs Kraken closes a strange opening week for Edmonton. Three games in five nights, two of them against Vancouver, and both of those finished in a way nobody would have drawn up. The Oilers lost 6-5 in overtime at home on Tuesday to the team that finished last in the league, then won 9-7 in Vancouver on Thursday in the highest-scoring game of the season so far.
Puck drop is 7:00pm ET at Rogers Place. Here is the Oilers vs Kraken team news and the form behind it.

Edmonton have owned this fixture
Four meetings last season. Edmonton won three, two of them by shutout, and one of them by five goals.
| Date | Result | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 25 October 2025 | Seattle 3-2 Edmonton | Seattle |
| 29 November 2025 | Edmonton 4-0 Seattle | Seattle |
| 4 December 2025 | Edmonton 9-4 Seattle | Edmonton |
| 31 March 2026 | Edmonton 3-0 Seattle | Edmonton |
Nine goals in one night at Rogers Place. Edmonton then shut Seattle out at home in March. The Kraken have scored four goals across their last three visits combined, and all four came in the game Edmonton won by five.
Edmonton’s injury list is the counterweight
| Player | Status | Expected back |
|---|---|---|
| Zach Hyman | Out | At least six games |
| Ryan Nugent-Hopkins | Out, lower body | 13 October |
| Frederik Andersen | Injured reserve, knee | Late December |
| Matt Savoie | Long-term injured reserve | No timetable |
| Mattias Janmark | Injured reserve | No timetable |
| Jason Dickinson | Injured reserve, foot | 10 October |
Zach Hyman is the big one. He is out for at least the next six games, which takes McDavid’s regular left winger out of the lineup for this one and most of the month. Max Jones moves up in his place.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is out until mid-October. Fifty-six points last season and the third centre behind McDavid and Draisaitl, which leaves Colton Dach and Owen Michaels filling in.
The crease is the bigger question. Frederik Andersen was signed in July on a one-year deal to compete for starts and is on injured reserve with a knee problem until around the end of December, leaving Tristan Jarry and Devon Levi. Jarry conceded six on 23 shots against Vancouver. Availability across the league is on our NHL injury report.
This is Edmonton’s third game in five nights. The trip to Vancouver in between produced nine goals and a win, with Devon Levi making 15 saves for the first victory of his season, so the crease is a little less open than it looked on Tuesday.
Seattle are a better team than 27th and still lost this badly
Seattle took 79 points and finished 27th with a goal difference of minus 37, two points and two places above Calgary.
Jordan Eberle led them on 55 points at 36. Matty Beniers reached 50 across all 82 games. Chandler Stephenson added 49 and Vince Dunn 44 from the blue line, both at minus 24. Kaapo Kakko was the standout at 40 points and plus 14, the only meaningful positive on the sheet.
The summer was busier than most. Seattle gave up a 2026 first-round pick and a conditional 2027 second for Mackie Samoskevich, who is now on injured reserve, and signed Bobby McMann to a six-year contract after he scored ten goals in 18 games for them late last season.
In goal, Joey Daccord played 47 games at a .897 save percentage and Philipp Grubauer was the better of the two at 2.65 and .909 across 32.
Team news
| Player | Club | Status | Expected back |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mackie Samoskevich | Seattle | Injured reserve, upper body | 3 October |
| Jake O’Brien | Seattle | Injured reserve, lower body | 6 October |
Seattle carry the shorter list by a distance, which is most of the Oilers vs Kraken case for them. Samoskevich is listed for the game date itself.
Players to watch
Connor McDavid. A goal and four assists in Thursday’s 9-7 win in Vancouver, after two assists on opening night. With Hyman and Nugent-Hopkins both out, more of it runs through him.
Evan Bouchard. A hat-trick and two assists in the opener, and still on the losing side. Ninety-five points from defence last season.
Kaapo Kakko. Plus 14 on a minus 37 team. Seattle’s most effective player against better opposition.
Whoever starts for Edmonton. Jarry was beaten six times by the league’s worst team on opening night. If that repeats against Seattle, questions get louder quickly.
Oilers vs Kraken prediction
Edmonton are much the better side, have dominated this fixture, and are at home. The history here is lopsided enough that one bad opening night should not change the read.
What gives pause is the schedule and the absences. Third game in five nights, back from Vancouver, without Hyman and without its third centre. Seattle has had the same single day off, so the rest is even, but it arrives on the back of a 6-1 win in Calgary and with much the lighter injury list.
Our lean: Edmonton, and the over if the total sits at 6.5 or lower. Edmonton have scored nine and four in their last two home games against Seattle, and eleven goals went in on Tuesday. We will firm the Oilers vs Kraken call up when the board posts.
Where these two sit against the other 30 is on our NHL power rankings.
Puck drop is 7:00pm ET on Saturday 3 October 2026 at Rogers Place in Edmonton, which is 5:00pm local time.
Edmonton took the series 3-1, including a 9-4 win at Rogers Place and shutouts in both Seattle in November and Edmonton in March.
Yes. Edmonton are without Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Matt Savoie, Mattias Janmark and Jason Dickinson, but McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are available.
Tristan Jarry or Devon Levi. Frederik Andersen, signed in July to compete for starts, is on injured reserve with a knee injury until around the end of December.
Edmonton finished 14th on 93 points and qualified for the playoffs. Seattle finished 27th on 79 points with a goal difference of minus 37.
