Philadelphia come into it having lost 7-0 at home on Wednesday. Carolina come into it having lost their own opener 1-0 in overtime. Neither start is what either expected.

Carolina are the defending champions

The Hurricanes went 16-2-1 through the 2026 playoffs. They swept Ottawa, swept Philadelphia, beat Montréal in five and then took the Final from Vegas in six, closing it out 3-0 in Las Vegas on 14 June.

The regular season was nearly as good. Carolina finished second overall on 113 points with a goal difference of plus 56.

Sebastian Aho led them on 80 points. Andrei Svechnikov scored 31 goals. Nikolaj Ehlers added 71 points in his first season there, and Shayne Gostisbehere put up 50 from defence in only 55 games.

Brandon Bussi went 31-6-2. Six regulation losses in 39 appearances, at a 2.47 goals-against average. Pyotr Kochetkov was 6-2-0 behind him.

Carolina are missing two players, one of them unsigned

Seth Jarvis had shoulder surgery in June and was given four to six months. He skated at training camp and believes he may beat that, but he is not expected back until late October. Thirty-two goals and 66 points in 71 games last season.

How they compare

Last season’s rates, which travel better from one year to the next than a record does.

Philadelphia were better than 11th suggests, and were just beaten 7-0

The Flyers took 98 points and finished 11th at plus seven. Then they opened this season by losing 7-0 at home to Pittsburgh, a result that flattered nobody. Dan Vladar faced 38 shots.

That is not the team they were last year. Travis Konecny led them on 68 points at plus 14. Trevor Zegras added 67. Owen Tippett scored 28 goals and Matvei Michkov reached 51 points in his second season.

Noah Cates finished at plus 26, the best rating on the roster by a distance, on 47 points across all 82 games.

The crease is the interesting part for a Canadian audience. Dan Vladar went 29-14-7 at 2.42 and .906 last season, and Joseph Woll is now his partner after Toronto traded him to Philadelphia in June.

Eight meetings, and six of them needed extra time

This is the oddest record in the league from last season. Carolina went 7-0-1 against Philadelphia across four regular-season games and a four-game playoff sweep, and six of those eight went to overtime or a shootout.

Philadelphia’s only win in the eight came in a shootout in April. They were never beaten by more than three, and two of the four playoff losses came in overtime. The sweep reads more lopsided than it was.

Players to watch

Sebastian Aho. Eighty points and the centre of everything Carolina do.

Travis Konecny. Sixty-eight points at plus 14 and the player most likely to make Philadelphia’s response look like a response.

Brandon Bussi. Thirty-one wins and six regulation losses. A Cup, and an opening-night shutout against him from Florida.

Matvei Michkov. Fifty-one points in his second season. The reason Philadelphia think the window is opening rather than closing.

Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 Philadelphia Flyers. Carolina have not lost a regulation game to Philadelphia in eight attempts, and the Flyers are coming off a seven-goal home defeat.

Carolina are the better team by every available measure. Fifteen points clear last season, a Stanley Cup, and a record against this specific opponent of seven wins and a shootout loss in eight.

Two things argue the other way. Philadelphia were humiliated at home on Wednesday and will not want a repeat in front of the same crowd. And Carolina are without Jarvis and Nikishin, and lost their own opener without scoring.

The history also says this is closer than the gap suggests. Six of the eight meetings went past regulation and Philadelphia lost two playoff games in overtime.
