Avalanche vs Jets: Prediction, Team News and Winnipeg Without Hellebuyck

Colorado Avalanche vs Winnipeg Jets prediction and picks

Thirty-nine points separated these two last season and the head-to-head finished level. Winnipeg won two, Colorado won two, and none of the four games produced more than six goals.

Avalanche vs Jets is a harder read than the standings suggest, though Winnipeg is attempting it without the goaltender who made those results possible.

Avalanche vs Jets odds

Nothing posted in Canada on 5 October. Our NHL odds page carries the boards as they go up.

Colorado had the best season of anyone

A hundred and twenty-one points, eight clear of the next club. Two hundred and ninety-eight goals scored, 197 conceded.

Nathan MacKinnon scored 53 goals and 127 points at plus 57. Martin Necas reached 100 at plus 47 and Cale Makar added 79 from the blue line. Brock Nelson scored 33 and Nazem Kadri, who arrived from Calgary during the season, put up 50 across the two clubs.

The goaltending is the quiet part. Scott Wedgewood went 31-6-6 at 2.02 and a .921 save percentage, and Mackenzie Blackwood 23-10-2 at 2.50 and .904. Wedgewood’s .921 was the best save percentage in the league.

Colorado has opened 8-4 over Los Angeles and 6-1 over St. Louis, which is fourteen goals across two games.

Winnipeg is doing this without Hellebuyck

Connor Hellebuyck is suspended with no end date. The Jets suspended him on 17 September for failing to report to training camp after a trade request. Our Hellebuyck trade request page has the background.

Stuart Skinner started the first two games. He went 23-17-9 across Edmonton and Pittsburgh last season at a .888 save percentage, and made 33 saves in Detroit on Sunday for his first win as a Jet. Clay Stevenson then won on his Winnipeg debut in Pittsburgh on Monday, with 30 saves.

The forwards remain good. Mark Scheifele put up 103 points last season on a club that finished 26th. Kyle Connor scored 39 goals and reached 92 points, and has three goals already this season. Gabriel Vilardi added 30 and Josh Morrissey 55 from defence.

Monday’s 3-2 win in Pittsburgh, settled by Cole Perfetti midway through the third, leaves Winnipeg one day’s rest before its fourth game in six nights.

Colorado’s list is all depth players. Winnipeg’s starts with Hellebuyck. League-wide availability is on our NHL injury report.

Players to watch

Nathan MacKinnon. A hundred and twenty-seven points last season and five in two games already.

Mark Scheifele. A hundred and three points on a team that finished 26th, which is one of the better individual seasons anyone had.

Scott Wedgewood. Hasn’t played yet, with Mackenzie Blackwood starting both games, so the start here is open.

Kyle Connor. Three goals in three games, two of them against Detroit.

Score prediction

Colorado Avalanche 4-2 Winnipeg Jets. Colorado has scored fourteen goals in two games, and both its goaltenders were at .904 or better last season. Winnipeg is 2-0-1, but both wins came by a goal, and it needed a third-period comeback in Pittsburgh.

Avalanche vs Jets prediction

The head-to-head record argues for Winnipeg and almost nothing else does. Those four games last season were played with Hellebuyck behind the Jets, and he is not available now.

Colorado arrives having scored fourteen in two, with MacKinnon on five points and Blackwood stopping 52 of 57 so far. Winnipeg has Scheifele and Connor, and wins from both Skinner and Stevenson, but the margins here are wide.

Our lean: Colorado, and the over if the total sits at 6 or lower. Colorado has cleared six in both its games. The caution is that all four meetings last season stayed at six or under, so this is a matchup that has historically tightened. Where each club sits is on our NHL power rankings.
