Baskonia missed out on the EuroLeague playoffs last season by just one position, finishing ninth, though they were two wins behind eighth-placed Bayern Munich. It was the third consecutive campaign in which they have failed to make the playoffs, and you have to go back to 2015/16 for the last time they reached the Final Four, finishing fourth as Laboral Kutxa.

But the Spanish side have started the new season well, winning their opening match to currently sit fifth. Fellow Spaniards Valencia were the opponents on the opening day of the 22/23 EuroLeague, but they were no match for Baskonia who held a six-point lead at half-time and later extending it with a dominant final quarter, inspired by Maik Kotsar.

Partizan, meanwhile, are back in the EuroLeague for the first time since 2013/14 having mostly participated in the EuroCup – earning their spot in this season’s competition as a wildcard entry – though they did also have a season in the Basketball Champions League. The one-time EuroLeague champions haven’t reached the Final Four of the competition since 2009/10 when they lost to Olympiacos in the semifinals and then CSKA Moscow in the third place game.

The Serbian side had a tough start to their EuroLeague return, up against reigning Bundesliga champions Alba Berlin, and the gulf in quality between the two sides truly showed. Alba Berlin went into half-time 18 points up and Partizan were only able to reduce that deficit to 16 across the final two quarters, even with the German side taking their foot off the pedal, ultimately losing 100-84. While there is one team below them in the table, Partizan did have the unwanted label of being the only team to concede 100 points in the opening week of the new EuroLeague season.
