Olympiacos made it to the semifinals of the EuroLeague last season, losing out to eventual winners Anadolu Efes 77-74 before falling to Barcelona in the third place game. The fourth-placed finish was Olympiacos’ best in the EuroLeague since 2016/17 when they were runners-up to Fenerbahce and they’ll be hoping for another successful campaign this time around.
The Greek side have got their 2022/23 campaign off to an excellent start, beating Barcelona 80-70 in Spain last week. After going behind in the first quarter, Olympiacos took control of the game thanks to a dominant second quarter, eventually edging the second half. Aleksandar Vezenkov was the star of the show scoring 20 points and seven rebounds.
Zalgiris failed to win Lithuania’s top league last season for the first time since 2010, left to settle for a third-placed finish, but they are regulars in the EuroLeague. The Lithuanian side will be hoping to bring back the glories of 2017/18 when they finished third in the EuroLeague, having seen their campaigns end at the regular season in each of the past two years.
However, it wasn’t a good start for Zalgiris, who lost their opening match against Maccabi Tel Aviv. It was an extremely close result in the end, with the Israeli side winning 84-83, and Zalgiris leading at half-time. But they would cede control in the third quarter, dropping six points behind, which they just couldn’t claw back.
