The difference is the prize. A social casino’s coins have no cash value, so nothing you win can be redeemed. A sweepstakes casino adds Sweeps Coins you can redeem for cash prizes, with no purchase necessary. A real-money online casino takes deposits and pays withdrawals under a state license, and it’s live in only seven states.

Sweepstakes casinos are banned by law in CA, CT, ID, IN, LA, ME, MT, NV, NJ, NY, TN and WA, and regulator or attorney general action has pushed the major brands out of DE, MI and WV. Oklahoma’s ban starts November 1, 2026. The offer cards on this page follow each casino’s own state rules and never show in California. What Is a Social Casino?

A social casino is a free-to-play app or website with casino-style games, played with one virtual currency that can’t be redeemed for cash or prizes. Slotomania, DoubleDown Casino and Big Fish Casino are the best-known examples. Coins are free to collect and buying more is optional, but a coin package buys more play, never a shot at a prize.

The apps say so in their own store listings. DoubleDown Casino’s App Store page says it offers no opportunity to win real money or prizes based on the outcome of play, and Big Fish Casino’s says the same of money and prizes. Google uses the prize to define the whole category. Its ad policy describes social casino games as “online simulated gambling-style games where there is no opportunity to win something of value.”

It’s a big business, but a shrinking one: about $6.8 billion worldwide in 2025, by an Eilers & Krejcik estimate cited in DoubleDown Interactive’s annual report, and the same firm forecasts a fall of more than 5% in 2026. Our social casinos guide covers both the free-to-play apps and the sweepstakes sites that use the name, and our social casino free coins guide tracks each app’s daily bonuses.

What Is a Sweepstakes Casino?

A sweepstakes casino is a casino-style site that runs on two coins: Gold Coins for play, and Sweeps Coins that can be redeemed for cash prizes, with no purchase necessary. It operates under sweepstakes promotion law, not a state gaming license. You can buy Gold Coin packages but never Sweeps Coins. Those come free at sign-up, from daily logins and by mail-in request, or as a bonus with a package.

A Sweeps Coin becomes a prize in three steps. You play it through once (1x is the norm), pass an ID check with photo ID and proof of address, and reach the casino’s minimum, usually 50 to 100 SC. Each SC is then worth $1 in prizes at most brands, paid by bank transfer and, at some, as a gift card. Fortune Wins counts in Fortune Coins instead, at 100 FC to $1. Our explainer on how sweepstakes casinos work covers the rules step by step, and our best sweepstakes casinos list ranks the brands we’ve reviewed.

Sportzino tops that list. It gives up to 170,000 GC and 7 SC free at sign-up, of which the required steps give 50,000 GC and 2 SC, and cash prizes start at 50 SC.

No purchase necessary. 18+ (19+ in AL and NE, 21+ in MS). Void where prohibited. New players only. 170,000 Gold Coins + 7 Sweeps Coins are paid across sign-up tasks; the required steps give 50,000 GC + 2 SC. Sweeps Coins carry a 1x playthrough; minimum 50 SC to redeem; ID verification required. Gold Coins have no cash value; 1 SC = $1 in prizes. Not available in CA, CT, DE, GA, ID, IL, IN, LA, ME, MI, MT, NV, NJ, NY, TN or WA. Sweepstakes rules apply.

Why Sweepstakes Casinos Call Themselves Social Casinos

Sweepstakes casinos call themselves social casinos because, in their own definition, a social casino is one you can play without paying. WOW Vegas’s help center says it’s a social casino, “which means you don’t need to spend real money to play.” Stake.us calls itself a social casino where “no investment to enter is required in any manner.” Both also pay out a prize coin. A “social sweepstakes casino” or “social sweeps casino” is the same thing: a sweepstakes casino under the social label.

Chumba Casino, McLuck, Modo, Pulsz and High 5 Casino use the label too, in their lobbies or app store listings, and Mega Bonanza Social Casino has it in its name. Each of them also runs a prize coin that can be redeemed under its sweepstakes rules.

Google draws the line at the prize. Its ad policy lists “Sweepstake casinos” among games that are not social casino games, and since October 28, 2025 it has treated them as ineligible for its social casino ad certification. Three questions tell you which kind of site you’re on:
