Even aside from the USMNT, it promises to be a festival of soccer, with an expanded 48-team pool providing the ingredients for potential shocks and even more moments of brilliance.

Overview of the USMNT at World Cup 2026

As co-hosts, the Stars and Stripes will be expected to make a deep run at next summer’s tournament, but that will bring a whole new set of pressures to a group that hasn’t had to run the qualifying gauntlet. Mauricio Pochettino has managed to take the USMNT to the Concacaf Gold Cup final and fourth place at the Concacaf Nations League. But on the whole, competitive soccer has been hard to come by, meaning there is potential for his players to be caught cold.

The USMNT will be under the spotlight every step of the way as they prepare for the tournament, both in terms of actually trying to make the roster, and then tuning up just before the big kick-off. And fans won’t accept any early blips or false starts; Pochettino’s side has to hit the ground running, or face the wrath of an expectant nation.

One major advantage the USMNT will have is familiarity with the myriad different locations and environments the World Cup will be held in. From the cold north of Seattle to the heat of Florida and Texas – not to mention the huge travel demands – these players are already accustomed to the unique challenges of sports in the United States.

How World Cup 2026 Scheduling Works

For the first time ever, 48 teams will contest the 2026 World Cup, meaning there are more games than ever before. When boiled down to individual teams, however, this simply means there will be one extra knockout round to play. Teams have still been divided into pools of four for the group stage – 12 groups, up from eight – but instead of the top two advancing into the round-of-16, they’ll now go into a round-of-32 – alongside the eight best third-place teams.

Should a team go all the way to the final or third-place match, they’ll play eight games in total: three group matches and five knockout ties.

With the tournament held across three massive countries, Fifa has clustered groups into geographic regions to help minimize travel demands. For example, the USMNT’s group games are all on the West Coast, in Inglewood and Seattle. Should they reach the round-of-32 as group winner or runner-up, they’ll either play in Santa Clara or Texas, reducing the distance and time zones they must cross heading into the knockout rounds.

A minimum window of 72 hours rest has also been implemented between match days, not least due to the sheer distances teams may have to travel between games – even when the regionalized format is at play. For example, in the aforementioned scenario, the USMNT plays its final group game in Inglewood, California. If they finish second in the group, they’ll face a three-hour flight to Arlington, Texas, and that is one of the shorter trips at this tournament.

Another radical move by Fifa is the implementation of mandatory hydration breaks in the 22nd minute of each half, regardless of the temperature or venue. This will effectively split the game into four quarters to allow players to take on water, but also give managers a back door to make tactical tweaks.

USMNT Group Stage Fixtures

Matchday 1: USA vs Paraguay

June 12, 2026

6pm (UTC–7)

SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California

The USMNT’s opening game is a tough fixture against Paraguay, who finished sixth in Conmebol qualifying, but with just four defeats from 18 games and only a point off Ecuador in second, in what was an incredibly tight table.

Los Guaraníes will bring a host of familiar faces to the match, not least Miguel Almiron and Braian Ojeda, who play in MLS with Atlanta United and Real Salt Lake, respectively. The Stars and Stripes beat Paraguay 2-1 in a friendly back in November, thanks to goals from Giovanni Reyna and Folarin Balogun.

The USMNT has only played at SoFi Stadium twice so far, with both games ending in defeat during the 2025 Concacaf Nations League finals. Panama beat them 1-0 in the semi-finals, before Canada beat them 2-1 to deny them third place.

There have been plenty of high-profile soccer matches at the 70,240-capacity venue in the past, including Brazil vs Costa Rica and Venezuela vs Mexico during the 2024 Copa America group stages, and big club friendlies between Arsenal and Barcelona, and Arsenal and Manchester United.

Matchday 2: USA vs Australia

June 19, 2026

12pm (UTC–7)

Lumen Field, Seattle, Washington

Up next is a hugely intriguing clash with Australia. Both are nations where soccer isn’t the No.1 sport, but where great efforts are being made to change that.

What’s more, there is recently bad blood between the two sides, with the USMNT having to come from behind to beat Australia 2-1 in a friendly in October, with players coming to blows and plenty of post-match fallout.

Australia are a big favorite of neutrals at World Cups and will be desperate to stifle the co-hosts on their own turf.

Matchday 3: Uefa Path C winner vs USA

June 25, 2026

7pm (UTC–7)

SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California

The USMNT returns to SoFi Stadium for their final group match, which will be the winner of Uefa Path C. We don’t yet know who that will be, with the bracket semi-finals seeing Slovakia go up against Kosovo, and Turkey facing Romania.

Regardless, Group D promises to be one of the closest at the World Cup, and this match could define whether or not the USMNT finishes top, second, as a best third-place team, or if they crash out of the competition entirely. Paraguay vs Australia in Santa Clara kicks off at the same time, which could be a recipe for incredible drama as the four teams attempt to ensure qualification to the round-of-32.

Potential Knockout Stage Fixtures for the USMNT

Where the USMNT finishes in Group D will dictate their path through the knockout rounds, as well as the schedule of upcoming games.

Winning Group D sees them go to Santa Clara on July 1, while finishing second would take them to Arlington on July 3. Should Pochettino’s side finish third, they could play their round-of-32 match as early as June 29, or as late as July 3, depending on where they place among the other third-place teams.

Most likely knockout fixtures if USMNT win Group D:

Round of 32: 3rd place team from B, E, F, I or J (Qatar, Ivory Coast/Ecuador, Japan/Ukraine, Norway

Round of 16: Belgium

Quarter-final: Spain

Semi-final: England or France

Final: Argentina/Brazil/Netherlands

Most likely knockout fixtures if USMNT finish 2nd in Group D:

Round of 32: Runner-up Group G (Egypt/Iran)

Round of 16: Argentina/Uruguay

Quarter-final: Canada/Portugal

Semi-final: Brazil/Netherlands

Final: Spain/France/England/Germany

Most likely knockout fixtures if USMNT finish 3rd in Group D:

Round of 32: Germany/France/Portugal

Round of 16: France/Germany/Canada

Quarter-final: England/Argentina/Uruguay/

Semi-final: Spain/Argentina/Brazil/Netherlands

Final: Any of the above

As you can see from the above, finishing third in the group would offer up a far tougher and more unpredictable path through the World Cup than topping Group D or even finishing as runner-up.

H2: Cities and Stadiums Hosting USMNT Matches

H3: Confirmed U.S. Host Cities

As mentioned, the USMNT will play two games at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, either side of their trip to Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington. SoFi Stadium has not been a good hunting ground to date, but they’ve fared much better in Seattle, winning seven of their eight matches in the city to date, and all six at Lumen Field.

The Seattle Seahawks NFL team posted Guiness World Records in 2013 and 2014 for the loudest outdoor crowd roar, and Lumen Field consistently has one of the best atmospheres in MLS when the Seattle Sounders play there – undoubtedly helping them become one of the league’s most successful teams with two MLS Cups, a Supporters’ Shield, four US Open Cups and continental titles with a Concacaf Champions League and Leagues Cup.

But despite the USMNT’s poor record at SoFi Stadium, California boasts three of Major League Soccer’s biggest names in LA Galaxy, LAFC, and San Jose Earthquakes, not to mention San Diego FC, who enjoyed an incredible expansion year in 2025.

Each of the top five soccer attendances in US history have come in California at the Rose Bowl, and that energy is sure to transfer to a different venue.

Should the USMNT reach the knockout rounds, their potential venues all depend on where they finish in the group. He’s also proven incredibly effective since joining AC Milan from Chelsea in 2023, registering 41 goals and 25 assists in 114 appearances to date, winning an Italian Super Cup along the way.

However, there are plenty of other dangerous attacking options who should make Pochettino’s roster. Folarin Balogun, Haji Wright, and Ricardo Pepi are battling it out for the starting striker spot and each has their merits.

Balogun is a regular starter for Monaco and has three goals in his last five caps, Wright the attacking focal point in a Coventry team sitting top of the Championship, and Pepi one of the top per-90-minute goalscorers in Europe and a two-time Eredivisie winner with PSV Eindhoven.

Beyond the obvious, there are other potent weapons in Pochettino’s arsenal, including Gio Reyna, Diego Luna, and Tim Weah.

Defensive Leaders and Goalkeeping Role

Matt Turner is the most experienced goalkeeper the USMNT has right now, but he faces serious competition for the starting spot. NYCFC’s Matt Freese has been Pochettino’s go-to guy most recently, but the likes of Patrick Schulte, Zack Steffen, and Ethan Horvath all have varying degrees of experience and could at least make the roster.

The likes of Chris Richards, Sergino Dest, and Antonee Robinson should start in defense, which will likely still be anchored by former Fulham veteran Tim Ream, who has 79 caps to date and was the most experienced player in the most recent roster.

This sort of experience will be vital throughout the World Cup, but firstly in the group stage, where games can often be tight, and soft goals conceded can come back to haunt you later on if things are decided on goal differential.

What USMNT Fans Should Know Before Matchday

Ticket Availability and Matchday Atmosphere

Tickets for the 2026 World Cup will be available via a ballot process, with fans applying for their games of choice on the Fifa website.

Households can apply for a maximum of four tickets per match and a maximum of 40 tickets across the entire tournament.

The current application window runs until January 13 2026, and there is no advantage to applying early.

Once the window closes, Fifa will run a lottery to decide whose applications have been successful, with fans notified of the decision in February.

Dynamic pricing – or ‘variable pricing’ as it’s called by Fifa – will be at play in some phases of the World Cup, while prices will generally be set based on demand for each fixture.

There are proposed fan festivals in each of the host cities for the 2026 World Cup, details of which will become available closer to the tournament.

How Group Results Affect the Rest of the Schedule

As you’ll have seen from the scenarios above, the outcome of the USMNT’s group campaign will greatly influence where they play their knockout games.
