Erling Haaland was the man of the night for Manchester City as they secured their spot in the 2022\/23 Champions League quarter-finals by beating RB Leipzig 7-0.<\/b><\/p>\n
An 8-1 win on aggregate, Haaland scored five goals at the Etihad, breaking a number of Champions League and club records in the process. But he wasn’t the first player to score more than a hat-trick in the Champions League, not by a long shot. He wasn’t even the first player to reach five goals in a game.<\/p>\n
Focusing just on the Champions League era, a player has scored at least four goals in a single game on 19 different occasions, ranging from the group stages to the knockout rounds.<\/p>\n
Haaland’s five goals against RB Leipzig came in just 57 minutes, and the Norwegian was robbed of a chance to grab the first ever Champions League double hat-trick, taken off in the 62nd minute.<\/p>\n
\u201cI told him [Pep Guardiola] when I went off \u2018I would love to score a double hat-trick\u2019 but what can we do. I had to go off,” Haaland told BT Sport after the game.<\/p>\n
