A top-six finish in the Premier League generally secures European football. But it’s not 100% certain. It relies on at least one of the two domestic cup winners qualifying for Europe through their league positions. Or the Premier League getting a fifth Champions League<\/a> spot. It’s been 12 years since the sixth-placed Premier League side last failed to qualify for Europe. Everton<\/a> were the unlucky team in 2012-13, when Swansea City won the Capital One Cup while finishing ninth, and FA Cup<\/a> winners Wigan Athletic were relegated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since their return to the Premier League in 2017-18, Newcastle have finished inside the top six just twice — in 2022-23 and 2024-25 — securing Champions League football both times. In 2023-24, with the added distraction of Champions League football, the Magpies finished seventh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s been almost 30 years since a Newcastle player last won the Premier League Golden Boot. Alan Shearer took the crown in 1996-97, with 25 goals in 31 games for the Magpies. He was the second Newcastle player to win the award, after Andrew Cole (34 goals in 40 games) two seasons earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
