Finishing in the top six is generally enough to secure European football in the Premier League.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Villa can take heart from the fact that it’s been 13 years since the sixth-placed Premier League side failed to qualify for Europe. That was Everton<\/a> in 2012-13, when Swansea City won the League Cup but finished ninth, while FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic were relegated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s now been a whopping 45 years since Aston Villa last won the English top-flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their best finish in the Premier League era came in the competition’s first season, when they finished as runners-up behind Man United.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while it’s unlikely they’ll end their drought this season, they have at least put themselves on the fringes of the title race, sitting third and seven points behind Arsenal after 26 games, with Man City sandwiched between. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Aston Villa player has never won the Premier League Golden Boot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie Watkins was the top scorer for Aston Villa last season, netting 16 goals in the Premier League. A year earlier, he netted 19 goals, holding the record for most in a single Premier League season for the Villans alongside Christian Benteke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watkins had a slow start to the season, scoring only once in 11 games, but the striker has improved and now has eight goals, level with Morgan Rogers as joint-top scorer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They’re both well behind Golden Boot leader Erling Haaland, who has 22 goals, but they just about remain in the betting stakes at 250\/1 each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three Aston Villa players have been named PFA Player of the Year since the award was first handed out in 1973-74. Andy Gray was the first in 1976-77, also becoming the first man to win the Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards in the same season. David Platt won the award in 1989-90, while Paul McGrath picked it up in 1992-93. But there hasn’t been Villa representation since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aston Villa ins and outs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Aston Villa had a relatively quiet summer in terms of arrivals, opting not to spend too much money. The Villans signed Modou Keba Cisse for \u00a34million, but the teenager won’t join until next summer. Victor Lindelof arrived on a free, and both Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho were signed on-loan. Marco Bizot, Zepiqueno Redmond and Yasin Ozcan were also brought in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marcus Rashford returned to Man Utd after his loan – then was loaned to Barcelona – while Philippe Coutinho made his temporary move to Vasco da Gama permanent. Jacob Ramsey moved to Newcastle in a deal worth up to \u00a343m, while a flurry of players were released or sent out on loan, including Leon Bailey’s loan move to Roma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Villa were more active in January, signing Tammy Abraham, Alysson and Douglas Luiz — the latter returning to the club on loan — while Donyell Malen, Evann Guessand, Samuel Iling-Junior and Yasin Ozcan all left on loan.<\/p>\n\n\n
