Manchester City went into the 2024-25 Premier League<\/a> season hoping to continue their domination of the English top flight.<\/strong><\/p>\n

No English men’s team had ever won the top flight in four successive campaigns before Man City achieved the feat last season. The question was: would they beat able to achieve the five-peat?<\/p>\n

The answer it seems is a resounding no. Man City have endured their most difficult campaign of the Pep Guardiola so far, looking at times like they would struggle to qualify for the Champions League<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But they are in a decent position now, with just two games left to play.<\/p>\n

After a quiet summer for incomings at Man City, Pep Guardiola moved to bring in a handful of new signings in January in an attempt to rescue what has been a pretty poor campaign for the Citizens so far.<\/p>\n

Four players joined the Citizens’ first-team squad for a combined \u00a3175m. Central defenders Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis arrived from Lens and Palmeiras respectively, alongside midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Porto. And, in arguably the most eye-catching transfer of the window, attacker Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt.<\/p>\n

Man City have been low on numbers at times this season after injuries, so it was no surprise that they opted against selling any of their first-team players during the January window. Although Kyle Walker did join AC Milan on loan.<\/p>\n

Who are Man City’s most important players?<\/h2>\n

Man City’s top Premier League Golden Boot contender: Erling Haaland<\/strong><\/p>\n

Erling Haaland didn’t have as strong a season as many expected him to have in 2023-24, only<\/em> scoring 27 goals in 31 Premier League games. It was a monumental fall from the 36 he scored in 35 matches in his debut Premier League campaign. With a record of 63 goals in 66 games, there was no need for Premier League defences to worry about Haaland anymore…<\/p>\n

There was some criticism about Haaland and how he fits in Man City’s team, having 24.54 touches per 90 minutes in 2022-23 compared to 26.91 in 2023-24. But he did average more shots and shots on targets per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season than in his debut campaign.<\/p>\n

He started off this season in record-breaking fashion, becoming the quickest player ever to reach double figures in a single Premier League campaign. But a run of underwhelming form and then injury sees Haaland on 21 goals from 29 games played.<\/p>\n

Man City’s primary playmaker: Kevin De Bruyne<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kevin De Bruyne remains one of the most creative players in world football and he’ll be a big miss for Man City when he leaves in the summer. In his final season for the club, De Bruyne has provided seven assists in the Premier League, with only Savinho (eight) creating more for the Citizens.<\/p>\n

De Bruyne does sit top of the Man City charts for chances created at 55, averaging 3.04 per 90, which is only bettered by Oscar Bobb — but he’s only played 13 minutes this season! And the Belgian does sit top for big chances created per 90 at 0.77. So De Bruyne really is in a league of his own.<\/p>\n

Man City’s card magnets & top tacklers: Mateo Kovacic<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rodri was Man City’s defensive screen last season and at the start of this, but has missed most of the campaign through injury.<\/p>\n

The Spaniard has been a massive loss. But in his absence, Pep Guardiola has been reliant on Kovacic for defensive resilience. The Croatia international has made more tackles (68) than any other Man City player so far this season, while he’s won possession in the middle third eight more times (65) than any teammate.<\/p>\n

Man City’s rising star: Nico O’Reilly<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oscar Bobb was our initial pick for this, but the Norwegian fractured his leg just before the Premier League season.<\/p>\n

Nico O’Reilly has been a favourite for Guardiola in 2025, stepping in at left-back despite being a more attack-minded midfielder. He’s played 18 games for the first team across all competitions this season, scoring twice in the Premier League\u00a0 and three times in the FA Cup.<\/p>\n
