USA players to watch at this year\u2019s Women’s World Cup<\/h2>\n

USA World Cup Golden Boot contender \u2013 Sophia Smith<\/h3>\n

When you look at the current USWNT squad, your eyes are immediately drawn to Alex Morgan for her goals, but don’t sleep on Sophia Smith. The 22-year-old is part of a frankly ridiculously talented attacking future for the USWNT (more on the others in a bit), netting 15 goals in 20 games in the NWSL last season to help Portland Thorns win the title. This season, Smith has started in pretty fine fashion again, though it’s a slightly more spread out contribution with four goals and five assists in 11 regular NWSL games.<\/p>\n

Smith also had a wonderful year in 2022 with the national team, scoring 11 goals in 17 appearances including one against England at Wembley and another against Germany, showing she can hurt the big teams.<\/p>\n

USA player to watch \u2013 Trinity Rodman<\/h3>\n

One of the players you’d expect to be playing alongside Smith this summer is Trinity Rodman, another one of USWNT’s young stars currently smashing it in the NWSL. So far this season, Rodman has three assists and two goals in nine WSL games for Washington Spirit, which helped her break the record as the youngest player in NWSL history to hit 10 goals and 10 assists. Rodman has it all, she’s direct in attack and can cause a goal threat, but can also create chances with her excellent passing. On top of all that, Rodman is a player who can also impact matches when she’s not on the ball, opening space with her movement for fellow attackers to drift into.<\/p>\n

USA emerging player to look out for \u2013 Alyssa Thompson<\/h3>\n

The newest American star, 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson is in her debut NWSL season having been first pick in the Draft, signed by Angel City, and it took her just 11 minutes to open her account on her debut. But before she was even drafted, still playing in college, Thompson made her USWNT debut against England at Wembley last October. Although she is only young, Thompson has already shown signs of quality and it will be a great experience for her and the USWNT’s future to be at the World Cup.<\/p>\n

USA tactical analysis & formation at the World Cup<\/h2>\n

Injury to Becky Sauerbrunn before the World Cup gave Vlatko Andonovski a dilemma at centre-back and despite having other defensive options in his squad, the USWNT boss has opted to start Julie Ertz in the back line. Ertz hasn’t long returned from absence and she was a big miss in the midfield, with USWNT struggling to replace her. That’s still the case now, with Andi Sullivan struggling in the No.6 role alongside Rose Lavelle and Lindsey Horan.<\/p>\n

Further up the pitch, Alex Morgan and Sophia Smith have been guaranteed starters, joined by either Lynn Williams or Trinity Rodman in the front three.<\/p>\n
