When Chelsea started the 2021\/22 season they will have undoubtedly been dreaming of a Premier League title challenge. After all, they were the defending European champions and had just signed Romelu Lukaku, viewed as the last piece of their puzzle, with the lack of a goalscorer the one thing keeping them from contesting.<\/p>\n

But after leading the table in December, the Blues ended the campaign fighting for their spot in the top four and and at times it looked as though they would throw it away. In the end, third was secured, with Chelsea finishing five points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, sealing their spot in the top four thanks to the poor performances of their rivals rather than their own quality at the end of the campaign.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, a top four finish was secured, Chelsea’s fourth in a row after finishing fifth in the 2017\/18 campaign which cost title-winner Antonio Conte his job. In fact, Chelsea’s worst two finishes in the past 10 seasons have come with the Blues as defending champions, also finishing 10th in 2015\/16.<\/p>\n

Things didn’t exactly get off to the best of starts for 2022\/23, mind. Following two defeats and a draw from their opening six Premier League games and what ultimately proved a fatal loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League, Boehly channeled his inner Gino Pozzo to sack Tuchel a month into the new campaign.<\/p>\n

Potter was appointed from Brighton for an unprecedented fee paid for a Premier League manager, and the English coach has made a solid start to his tenure, recording back-to-back wins over Crystal Palace and Wolves to see Chelsea sit in fourth, and not to mention a recent double over Milan in the Champions League.<\/p>\n

However, things have since gone awry with the Blues picking up one win from their last seven Premier League games, leaving them sitting outside the Champions League places.<\/p>\n
